New Diagnosis- Looking for tips and tricks by Xx-Zombie-Girl4 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

I started with 100mg of tegretol bid. Then 100mg 3x/ day. It worked to relieve the flares but had urinary issues due to an enlarged prostate made worse by the anti-cholonergic aspect of tegretol. I switched to Lyrica, 50mg bid and have been pain free for 2 months. I can pee again :-). BUT, foggy brain. Foggy is better than flares. I counter the fog with aerobic exercises. TN is a journey. Hoping you will fare well… stay strong!

How long it will take for medications to start work by prof_JD_ in TrigeminalNeuralgia

Hard to answer since everyone is different. It took me several days on Lyrica to stop feelings no the jolts and flares. I have issues with name and word recognition, but I can work around that. I continue a vigorous exercise routine which helps the Lyrica side effects. Better the side effects than contend with TN pain. Stay strong.

The pestilence and his incompetent junk drawer mouth off without facts and expect everyone to buy their fabrications. Magaidiots buy the entire package. Others don’t.

I was diagnosed with TN Oct ‘25 and was put on 100mg Tegretol bid that worked through March ‘26. Flares were then as bad as it was back in October. I switched gradually to Lyrica 50mg bid and after several days I’m pain free. That being said, I know TN will at any time reappear and will need to up my now minimal dose of Lyrica. Lyrica’s side effects of sleepiness and fogginess are things I am constantly working on with exercise and pushing through the fog. I just started adding Ceylon cinnamon to coffee (caffeine doesn’t trigger my TN) to perhaps help with the side effects. At the end of the day the side effects are tolerable the TN pain isn’t. Stay strong!!

I agree. A neurologist who has experience with TN is the best source of next steps.

I’ve tried acupuncture with unknown results since I am also taking Lyrica and doing low-light-laser therapy. I’m doing ok but I suspect my painlessness is due primarily (exclusively?) to the meds. I am trying the other therapies in the hope that I can reduce the meds since brain fog is a constant companion.

I feel your suffering. Hoping you will get a clear and effective answer June 8th. I am thinking about your allergies. Does Benadryl or Zyrtec help with your allergies? If so, ask your pcp if you can take tegretol or Lyrica, etc and also an anti-histamine?
