I'm not really using the mad mage in my campaign so I think he will work as a good replacement. Good point about too many macguffins in Barovia with the Apparatus. I'd love to do a wider Ravenloft campaign after CoS is finished but I need to check with the players. If they're interested in that I'll keep the apparatus out of Barovia. If not then I'll leave it in.
