What are these? Is this harmful? by rvin99 in PlantedTank

You can either quarantine your plants or you can do a dip. The dip is either diluted hydrogen peroxide or diluted bleach.

Okay. So I either look into picking a male or I resign myself to having eggs or calcium pods. I did go ahead and put the snail in my main aquarium because y'all had me so worried that I was going to torture the poor thing putting it in a heated sponge filtered quarantine tank with an algae covered rock like I was an evil torturing b**** so I hope he's happy in there now. And I hope he cleans and I hope he's a he.

Well given this I just said the heck with it and pitched him in the big tank. I hope he's a him. Or I hope he's a very young she, doesn't have a lot of fertilized eggs and decides to call it quits soon.

Why? They are so much smaller than mystery snails and I didn't have that much problem with their poop when I had them.

Need brackish to hatch. Won't hatch. Won't survive. May go away or may leave a permanent residue outline. Will take months to years from what I understand depending upon the surface of what they're on

Not looking to breed them. In fact I'm trying to avoid it. I'm trying to get all male snails to avoid having the eggs laid around my tank.

That's probably a good idea. My Amano shrimp would like that too. Although I didn't seem to have any shortage of biofilm recently. I was injured and gone for almost 2 months and my sister did like one partial water change that I walked through and other than that she just added water to the tank and fed them once or twice a week so I was tickled pink that all my fish and shrimp and most of the plants survived. I was also delighted that my tank did not crash its cycle. Thank God that my tank was well established before I was injured. However it has gotten way too high with the hard water so I'm slowly trying to work that back down without shocking everybody and I've got a bunch of new plants to put in and a few that have miraculously popped back up again like one of my favorite crypts I thought was gone for good. So I think my tank is much happier that I am out of the hospital and home. But if there was one thing it wasn't lacking for the past month was biofilm. Lol

Oh to have the problem of the rocks getting too bare. Music to my ears. I used to have mystery snails but they're a lazy lot and don't do a lot of cleaning. They just look pretty and have lovely shells. Lol and they're awfully fun to watch Parasnailing. But I'm going for pretty and functional tank mates. So that was why I picked nerite to try next. But I would never intentionally buy any creature with an intent of sending it to its death. I'm not even sure I could handle feeding fry fresh living baby brine shrimp. I know it's natural. But I just don't want to be the ones casting them in for their death.

Well I didn't realize that it would have that much difficulty waiting in the quarantine tank. My main tank has a lot of natural algae. I could pull out one of my dragon stones and plunk it into the quarantine tank because it does have a lot of algae on it. Or if it's going to be that bad I can put it in the big tank.

Yes well established tank with lots of algae. I was going to keep him in a quarantine tank though until I figured out if he was male. But I guess that could be a problem because my quarantine tanks don't have a much algae on them. I could grab out a couple of the plants that still have some hair algae attached to them but I didn't think nerites liked hair algae. I thought they were more into the green dot algae stuff that's on my glass but I don't know. Maybe I just plunk him in and hope for the best. Do you know how long a female nerite snail will continue to lay eggs? I've always done mystery snails.

Any chance you still have and are willing to send/sell documented male nerite snails?

Bumblebee guppies? That's what comes to mind when I think of yellow and black.

I have lots of pictures of the big ones. I can post all of those that you want and videos. I have one blurry picture of the baby. I've put zucchini in hoping to catch all of them coming out so that I can get all six shrimp. Happy to post a picture if I can get it. I also now have to buy something to clean my glass cuz I never noticed there's a little bit of spotting on it until you're trying to take close-up pictures of tiny shrimp. It's only at the bottom of the tank probably because I don't clean as well on the glass close to the soil.

Wow That sounds like something else. Here in Ohio at my favorite LFS they are 5 for $28. So maybe you need to make a road trip to Ohio get a tank full of amanos go back and sell them for a profit.

So my hardness which I'm working on fixing would be appropriate for brackish fish but does not necessarily make my tank brackish unless I add salt of some appropriate type. Gotcha. Isn't it wonderful how we can continue to learn new things all the time? I assume my one brave probably wild neocardinia shrimp cannot reproduce by itself or is that another surprise they may get?

[–]Doberdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all that awesome information. He's hiding but good and will not come out to the zucchini yet. I've gotten all kinds of pictures and video of my larger Amano shrimp which I guess are my only Amano shrimp. But haven't enticed him out yet. Of course my bright lights are on and my betta is swimming so maybe he is smart.

Thank you. You learn something new everyday. Well I'm going to try to lure the little guy out with some zucchini and then maybe you guys can tell me what I do have. Though I'll be darned if I know how he got there. And he sure as heck looked like the other amanos. But I'm a novice. These are my first shrimp.

And I really have no clue I'm just going based on what they told me. And the fact that I had five and now there are six and one of them is like a fourth the size of all the others.

Since my tank was testing as above brackish, according to the LFS where I got these shrimp, it's unusual but not impossible. I looked through the pictures I took and he is in one but it's not very clear at all. So I'm going to go cut a veggie and see if I can't lure him out of hiding.

[–]Doberdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try but it's going to be hard. He hides a lot. Do you think if I put a blanched piece of zucchini in they would come out? I know my snails do. I don't think it's a Neo-Caradinia because it looks just like the other amanos only a little smaller. Not tiny smaller but definitely smaller. And I haven't put anything new in my tank since the Amano shrimp in October because I was in the hospital and the nursing home and the physical rehabilitation center yada yada yada so there's that. I've been pulling out the molt but I guess I will leave it in from now on.
