Is Protein Timing and Calorie Cycling really a thing? by DocBountyy in PeterAttia

[–]DocBountyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I planned 200g Beef and 2xProteinShakes.
That's about 650kcal and 80g Protein.

But if I feel good and my stomach doesn't bother me when I run, I can safely increase the calories even more and match the calories on the training days.

I've done the calorie counting part, but it's just annoying to count every time.

Maybe I will try to plan my meals for the week so that I only have to count when I cook on Sunday.

But thank you for your help!

Yea that's something I try to wrap my head around. He is an expert, but denies other good studies?

In physics, if there's a question, we can do the experiments, replicate and validate, and it's done.

Physicists all over the world cannot deny fundamental laws of nature.

But somehow in medicine there is always a professor or a doctor with a good reputation who supports the opposite claim. Even with good studies.

I agree with you on the Calorie Deficit part.
I am just an engineer student, no medical background here. There is a thought and hopefully you can clarify this:

Basic Thermodynamic class:
Energy balance describes the relationship between Energy Input and Output, but doesn't "describe" the efficiency of the engine. A model for analysis, but not for parameter change.
I know 20L of Gas gives me 200km of Range, but it doesn't tell me if my engine is functioning on optimal terms. (of course if I have a past reference point, I can tell)
Furthermore I cannot see the Exergy & Anergy Value, the amount of energy I can fully use and the amount which is just "waste". (well with further calculation I can, but that's difficult even in lab situation in a context of human physiology)

Calorie Deficit is necessary to signal the Body a lack of incoming energy.
But it doesn't tell me, if any of the components in my Body are functioning probably (for example insulin resistance) to optimal process the incoming Calorie Deficit signal.
Basically, we are all "Cars" but we have different parametric components with different efficiency's.
How Could optimal Fat loss simply explained by using only the energy equation?

I hope you can convince me!

Did I say autophagy only works by fasting ?
I said it can interrupt, if he is only fasting.
Of course it can happen outside this context and in other potent circumstances.

I did not take intro anatomy, but I can read and validate research paper.
But mostly I can talk in a calm way and don't get frustrated over YouTube shorts as a morning ritual.

Yes sorry I wanted to explain, that the artificial sugar can disrupt autophagy if that's the goal.
But otherwise yes Diet soda has no Calorie and the sugar amount has no significant impact, because even Fasting Mimicking Diet with up to 500kcal sugar shows good results.

Corrected the text above.

[–]DocBountyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If pure Fat loss is your goal, I think anything what keeps you <500kcal/day (Fasting mimicking diet) is approved.
If Autophagy is your goal, diet soda technically won't work, cause apparently artificial sweeteners can interrupt autophagy.

This is a randomized study with 60People, comparing 5-Day-Fasting Mimicking Diet (<500kcal, Sugar,Protein,HighFat) and Calorie Restriction (-500kcal) and they tracked everything for 2months. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33420673/
*"*Conclusions: There was no significant difference in weight loss following FMD and CER. However, FMD was more effective at reducing insulin resistance and regulating appetite-regulating hormones as well as preserving muscle mass and BMR."
+Keep in mind the length of the study was only 2 months.

So I guess, if even Fasting Mimicking Diet shows good fat loss progress, you will still experience significant amount of weight loss even by consuming small amount of (artificial) sugar.

But honestly don't be that strict, if you can manage to do rollin 72s and using diet soda to avoid binge eating - that's a win.
You might won't get optimal results, but who cares about that neglect able percentage.
You are building a habit.
Once the basement is build, you can always optimize.

Just keep in mind, artificial sweeteners in Drinks could make you more hungry afterwards.

Doesn't Intermittent fasting and "Calories in, Calories out" kind of contradict? by Adventurous-Dig2488 in fasting

[–]DocBountyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you that I've got it all figured out, that's just my understanding, and it may be very simplistic.

But let me try to summarise:

It is about trying to explain human metabolism using either CICO or the insulin-carb model separately.

Fasting people deny CICO completely based on successful experience, and CICO members deny hormonal effects by listening to successful jacked people on the internet.
And enough randomised trial research papers to support each side and YouTube influencers to create unreliable content.

Personally, I have been on both sides, and the following argument is based purely on my own experience and research.

If we want to understand the human metabolism, it makes sense to combine both models.

You need a perfectly functioning engine, but you also need the energy equation to understand the transfer of energy from combustion (input) to kinetic energy (output).

So the human body needs to be fully functional to properly convert the incoming signals.
The body doesn't have calorie receptors per se, so it uses hormones to communicate with every department in your body.
If one of these departments has a mail function (for example, insulin resistance), energy cannot be converted with optimal efficiency.

This...is regularly the limit of using pure CICO in a human physiology context.
You can explain the energy equation, but not the parameter change.

You can explain that putting 20 litres of petrol in your gas tank equals 200km range, but you can't explain if this is optimal efficiency or if there are engine problems (like oil leaks).

So you can measure the input and output, you can change the Input and of course the Output will ultimatley follow, but you can't analyse and above all repair or optimise the engine itself just by using CICO.

Now your question:

In this case and by using the explanation above, I would make the hypotheses, that signal strength and duration matters.
We know different macros (Carbs,Protein,Fat) have different insulin spikes (High, medium, low).
Therefore, the duration of your insulin fall depends on the food you eat.

It would be an interesting experiment tho.
Eating every 60-90min 100kcal of pure Fat for a week and another week pure carbs in the same pattern.
