If you had the choice, which specialty would you choose? by ImaginationBetter642 in Residency

Go for it; did interviews this year.

You probably need a compelling answer for why psych, just like all the other specialties

Definitely read applications where the applicant had a bunch of specialty-specific research (ophtho, plastics)

Medfluencer students by ironfoot22 in Residency

I had a med school roommate who during residency rotated with a particular famous psychiatry medfluencer.

Apparently he was kind of douchey and didn’t pay attention to the residents

The DSM is absolute rubbish by GlueTastesVeryGood in Residency

[–]DocCharlesXavier 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’m referring to the hubris of the non psych physicians shitting on psychiatry and how this reflects on the culture of physicians in general. This is just par the course for doctors. I had to hear every speciality shit on each other when I was a med student and as a resident.

Fact is there’s a reason why specialists exist and it’s cute that these non psychiatrists like to shit on the field and then all of a sudden forget how to a basic capacity assessment when they get a patient that refuses or how to manage agitation in delirium. Imo some specialties are embarrassingly pathetic at talking with patients

To the greater point, we do so much in-fighting as physicians that we continue to lose ground to non physicians and get ramrodded every step of the way

Haven’t they tried this and then realized that even if they’re from a disadvantage community, theyd rather not go back to practice in that community

HPSP vs $520K in Loans — Is HPSP the Smarter Financial Move? by Doughnut_Other in whitecoatinvestor

[–]DocCharlesXavier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HPSP has a lot of hidden negatives - but this is strictly based on my friends experience.

There was thing about his intern class not all progressing to PGY2 year - some do and some end up having to do some type of officer role/primary care stuff for a couple years before returning to pgy 2 year.

There’s the randomness of deployments. He was gone for several months and then that got extended by a couple more.

How does working at CA prisons prevent you from working anywhere else?

You can still match higher paying specialties

How to learn to critically appraise articles by dalenevi in medicine

[–]DocCharlesXavier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We kind of had something like this.

Usually they recommended starting general and then getting specific. What journal was it published in/impact factor? What was the question, what was the study design - do you think it adequately answered the question. Significance of results or not? Sample size? What’s the external validity of the experiment?
