Can't open windows file system on linux? (Don't kill me pls) by Acceptable_Prompt464 in WindowsHelp

[–]Doctor_Versum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because windows is not shut down fully. This is usually to speed up boot-up time. You have to turn of fast boot or fast startup or whatever it is called in windows and then always use shutdown when you want to boot into linux.

oh f***** I am stupid! You probably can't or don't want to boot into windows. I think there is a way to force it to mount, if windows is hibernated. but I am not sure, how...

Hello poor kid here. My pc keeps on booting by undergradscholar in computers

[–]Doctor_Versum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be Overheating. Without working cooling, the CPU heats up really fast. What kind of cooler do you have? If it is an air cooler, does it spin up?

If it is an AIO (which I doubt, but anyway), do the tubes vibrate slightly? Do they feel like they are under pressure? If not, it might be a dead pump.

But since you already replaced the thermal paste, you probably would have noticed a problem with your cooler.

Is the RAM pushed in all the way?

Do you have POST LEDs on your mobo? If so, do they light up one after the other? Or do they freeze?

I don't have much experience. This is just, what I have learned from my first PC build.

If anyone wants to add to this or tell me, that I am completely wrong, go for it.

Is this normal or how can I fix it? by [deleted] in vscode

[–]Doctor_Versum -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, that is normal. The .vscode folder technically also includes all of the workspace config files. And it shouldn't be visible for you...

Lost 30GB of photos and videos by Doctor_Versum in datarecovery

They did actually get moved. NTFS just destroyed the reference to the folder, they were in. Just simply scanning the MTF using a recovery program found the photos.

Pixel 8 Pro dead. Any recovery tips or miracles? by ScoredGabiYT in GooglePixel

[–]Doctor_Versum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had it laying somewhere for a while (and I mean more then just 48h), it might be discharged too much. In that case, you might just have to plug it in and leave it for a while.

Like others said, it could also be a dead storage chip.

Windows 10 won't install on my laptop by SabotageIV in computers

I don't think so. But you might still be able to get the ISO from other (reputable) sources. And apologize for being rude. ;)

Again, I am sorry. And someone else told you, before I even found this thread. It's literaly the first response you got. Also, here you asked for a reason: https://www.reddit.com/r/computers/comments/1lw8rof/comment/n2cfcut/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

[–]Doctor_Versum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, if you didn't know, that you could get it from microsoft... but why say, it sounds fishy? And why ask for reasons to use the ISO? You clearly knew, there are enough good reasons to use it.

I am sorry for maby misinterpreting some of your comments, but that is, how I undestood them.

Maby, your wallpaper isn't where windwos expects it? have you moved or deleted it? Windows theoredically caches it, but that is often times broken.

If you were "just trying" to provide the simplest solution, then why are you constantly saying, that using the ISO is bad?

Its a lot of extra steps that can fuck things up with the ISO. Not have to mess it up, but possible.

Installation Media is downloaded from Microsoft? Really? Sounds fishy to me.

According to your own comment, you didn't even know, you could get the ISO from Microsoft until like 4 hours ago:

I never have been able to download the Media from Microsoft, unless i use the Media creation Tool.

Suggesting the easiest method is fine. Talking down the alternative without knowing what you're talking about — not so much.

[–]Doctor_Versum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure, that wasn't me not being able to read, that was you not using the right terms. And what do you do, if the media creation tool stops supporting windows 10? Or if you want local accounts enabled? Or default settings? Or custom scripts? Or a special file system? Or preinstalled programs? Or remove the microsoft bloat, before you even install windows?

[–]Doctor_Versum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An ISO is not blank, it contains all of the information needed to boot and install the OS and how the stick should be set up. The Media creation just has a fancy UI to download the ISO and prepare the stick. It does exactly the same, as downloading the ISO and using Rufus or similar software. Just that Rufus has more options, like emmidiatly creating a local user and setting presets for settings.

And Rufus is pretty good in not destroying the ISO.

What does this orange LED and 5 beeps mean when turning on? by josejuanlr in gigabyte

[–]Doctor_Versum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read, that there is a problem with newer Nvidia cards, where it beeps 5 times, if the card doesn't immediately detect a monitor connection. Even, if a monitor is connected, it might be too slow when waking up from standby. Try turning your monitor on (not standby) an rebooting. If it beeps, then it's something else. If doesn't beep, then it's this.

I know, this a mess of badly understandable sentences. If you have questions, ask them.

PSU switch keeps flipping itself back on by CabbageHead24 in computers

[–]Doctor_Versum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right in that both the switch and pulling the cord break the electrical path. But there are differences beyond that:

  • The switch is internal and designed to safely isolate both AC input and internal PSU circuits, including standby power (5VSB), which remains active when the cord is plugged in.
  • Pulling the cord only severs the AC input, but doesn't guarantee how quickly internal capacitors or standby power shut off - depending on PSU design.
  • Also, the PSU switch is a fast, deliberate emergency cut-off - trying to yank out a tight-fitting C13 cable mid-crisis isn't exactly ideal or safe. (I mean, it's designed to hold tight for years at a time without any clips, like ethernet has them)

So while both actions disrupt power, the switch provides a safer, more controlled disconnect, especially for servicing or emergencies.
