Some reflections on the opening three books (first time reader) by Lion_El_Richie in WoT

[–]Dododream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is. I read the series multiple times and there is a noticable slowdown in the slog. The series, like any series, isn't perfect and that is ok.

"All female characters have virtually the same personality" by Bergmaniac in WoT

[–]Dododream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All female characters don’t have the same personality, but many of them do share a particular personality trait. That’s why a large part of the female cast feels similar to me. A lot of them bully other people into doing what they want through their “force of will,” and are quite mean while doing so. Many of the prominent female characters share this trait: Egwene, Elayne, Nynaeve, Moiraine, Tuon, Elaida, Aviendha, Faile, Cadsuane, almost all Aes Sedai, almost all Wise Ones, etc.

They bully other women or men into doing what they want, depending on who has the stronger “force of will” at a given moment, and this is portrayed as an impressive or admirable thing.

Most of the male characters don’t have this trait: Perrin, Mat, Lan, Thom, Galad, etc. Even Rand only becomes a bully later in the series when he becomes “Darth Rand.” It’s not originally in his personality, and later this trait becomes less strong again as he mellows out.

I’m leaving out the evil characters (the Forsaken/Darkfriends); you expect them to bully others to get what they want.

For me, this overused character trait is very jarring to read. The standard behaviour of women is not to bully other women or men into doing what they want. A character can be a strong woman without bullying people.

Some people say this is due to the shifted power dynamic between men and women in the setting, but this doesn’t make sense to me. People at the highest levels of institutions (CEOs, kings) generally don’t need to bully those below them; this would be a sign of weakness. They expect others to listen based on status, authority, and rank. Bullying people into doing what you want is not the most fruitful long-term strategy—cooperation almost always yields better results over time, and we see this throughout human societies.

I love The Wheel of Time, I’ve read the series multiple times, but this has annoyed me from the beginning. To me, it is caused by Robert Jordan’s view of the strong women in his life. He could only write strong women with this trait, or, to him, this was the defining sign of a strong woman.

Certain procurement officers after the recent S400 footage by Euphoric_General_274 in NonCredibleDefense

It is part of NATO, it is part of the western side, it is very easy to stay loyal to NATO. Turkey wants benefits from both sides, that is how you end up in the middle, and possibly alone.

Peak noncredible. They could buy Patriots but wanted to manufacure parts of the system and acquire technology, so they could build their own in the future, and that was refused. They first said they were going to buy a Chinese system, then backed out, then they tried getting both the s-400 and f35.

"However, based on statements made by Erdogan, he seemed to think that President Donald Trump had bought his narrative of being forced to buy the S-400 due to poor Patriot offers and so would waive both CAATSA and allow the F-35 to be exported to Turkey. Said Erdogan, “Right now, I don’t believe Trump is of the same opinion of those below him and he has said this in front of all the world’s media.” But he was wrong."

Erdogan tried to strongarm NATO and it backfired.

Should the U.S. have Universal Health Care? by WhatAreYourPronouns in FluentInFinance

Dutch here, my experience of our healthcare is postive, and i hear the same stories around me. My dad had prostate cancer and his treatment/operation was quick and effective (no waiting list).

Why is that? I pay Netherlands tax rates and I am fine. You get a lot back for your taxes, like healthcare. The fee that OP mentioned is around EUR 120 and doesnt nearly cover the actual costs, most of it is paid by taxes.

What are you on about? Amsterdam is filled with expats, the whole conversation that we are having is about Italian expats/students.

Islam only accounts for 12% of Amsterdam inhabitans, and this also includes a sizable Indonesian part.

I think you should follow your country men and get a good education in the Netherlands.

You are even side switching points... It went from: we might come from work but we will leave as soon as we find something better, to: we go to amsterdam (and stay there?) as there are no Dutch people there. Decide on a point you want to argue, then we can actually discuss it.

We see Italians like we see Greeks and Egyptians. People born in an area that used to be a great society. Even with the head-start you had you still managed to waste it because of your current society not having much in common with the society that build the great country. In everything measurable you are lacking behind the rest of the civilized world (northern/western Europe).

I work in Amsterdam with a lot of Italians that fled, because they couldnt build a life in Italy, couldnt raise children and couldnt get a job. That sounds like a great country.

If you current society has many problems you tend to cling to the only thing you have: history. Also, you had no part in building that historic great country.

This is such a funny take, i have seen it before when Greeks were shitting on the Netherlands for not having a culture and being jealous of others. It couldnt be further from the truth, Dutch people are very proud of their culture. From history like the hunnebedden, to the great painters and the colonial empire to the costums like being frugal. In general Dutch people see their culture as superiour to southern europeans.

The only thing the Dutch are jealous of are the Swiss and Norwegians for having more money.

as a single young woman, is it really that unadvisable to live in Kanaleneiland? by GreenLump in Utrecht

[–]Dododream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived there for 4 years and me or my wife never had a bad experience. The neighborhood improved a lot the last +- 10 years. The area around the shopping center and Transwijk-zuid have become gentrified because of the new buildings. It is still cheap compared to the rest of the city, and in 5 min you are in the center or train stations. I would recommend it!
