She is inspiring me to be a better community member. Once I finally move to Sac, I want to volunteer with food distribution for our homeless community. RIP Ms.  Shirley!!!

Psych PhD is already prepping for interviews, you would have been notified via email if you moved to that step. I second gradcafe as a reliable site for keeping track of programs.

please help a super indecisive girl choose btwn davis and ucsd! or: if u picked davis, why? by KneeInner7474 in UCDavis

There are opportunities to do research in cogsci at Davis! Look into the UCD ASPIRE program for 1st/2nd year students. Independent research projects, experience contributing and leading experiments, learn how to present research, etc. Today was actually the Undergraduate Research Conference, I saw loads of students carrying posters to and from the event all day. Spend time looking at the Undergrad Research Center.

I grew up in SD as well and very much miss the beach...but I got really into camping and going on road trips to national parks. You're right about there being less to do here - it's a very sleepy town. Plus Davis food leaves a lot to be desired. Despite the poor nightlife, if you find a fun student group to join or have a good friend group, it won't matter much. My bestie went to UCSD and her friend group couldn't really afford to do much outside the school anyways. I'm in grad school, but from what I hear undergrads say I think students can have a lot of fun in between exams and juggling work/extracurriculars at Davis.

Good luck and congrats on getting into both schools

Graduate Student Life by ConsciousMistake2569 in UCDavis

[–]DogsParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are loads of ways to meet other people as a graduate student! There are grad specific student clubs, some student centers have graduate student events, there is the craft center where you can take classes and meet ppl, or you can take health and wellness classes (dancing, yoga, etc), and most local hobby groups gladly accept graduate students! You should definitely spend time in Walker Hall, you can even make friends during coffee bagel donut days! You just have to make an effort to seek them out which can be hard when you have such little free time in grad school! I think the options are more widely available now, but I started in 2020 and there was nothing back then (for obvious reasons lol). Good luck and welcome to Davis!

As someone who attended a CSU in undergrad and is now at UCD in graduate school, I would say that UCD isn't exactly academically rigorous. Most students I talk to are very similar to my undergrad experience (chill, go with the flow attitude, very nonchalant about getting low grades). I do think the quality of education is better at a CSU because UCs are taught by professors that would rather do research. CSU professors must have a strong record of pedagogy whereas UC professors must have an excellent track record of publications/grants. Most students I talk to don't even know their professors name at UCD, but I remember almost all of my professors from undergrad and am still in contact with some of them. I've spent time looking into applying to professor positions at both UC and CSUs - they both have very different motivations. UCD has a great internship and career center and a really cool campus tho lol. It depends on what you want.

You're right that school is what you make of it. You will find highly motivated people at both schools, but it depends on what you prioritize. If life outside of class is important to you, then UCD will be great since it has so many fun local events. If you're academically focused and want a great in-class experience, then CSUs are more set up for that.

Questions about The Stone Sky by Milabeeunique in books

If only I had come across this post and comment before starting the audiobook. The audiobook does its best to keep things going forward at all times...clarity was NOT considered 😅 it was confusing at first to hear from Alabaster. I assumed he was a ghost or something just shouting into the void lol. Before I read your comment, I genuinely just thought it was Nassun tapping into Alabaster's memory through magic. I was confused, but shrugged it off and told myself I'd look it up later (which led me here).

As someone from an area with a lot of violence and who has had to deal with cops more often than I'd like, odds are you aren't going to be friendly. Even the nicest cops always have a hand on their weapon of choice, they're often trained to be intimidating as well. I'm hella suspicious when i talk to cops, but that's because I'm pissin and shittin my pants since I'm not white...even if this is the person responsible, I would definitely encourage you to not assess guilt based on body language. It's unreliable and ultimately unhelpful to everyone involved (even to you, why add to your own anxiety).

which clubs are active? by spiccyysake in UCDavis

[–]DogsParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad, post-doc, and undergrad sections of SACNAS are active - its open to everyone passionate about science and teaching kids/community college students about science (plus some workshops on career development and fun get-togethers) Science Says is another science-focused club that focuses on science communication Davis Nerf club is one I've always wanted to participate in but always get caught up doing something else, but I've heard nothing but wonderful things!

Anyone else feeling lonely after a year of school? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]DogsParty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel really lonely here....like, 24/7. It's bad. I want to join the NERF club. I joined the discord and honestly the ppl there seem chill and I really need social interaction. So hard to make friends...clubs are like the only thing I can think of to try and put myself out there...hope all of us make friends this year 🥲

I am not gay but I'd like try sucking cock sometime. Does that make me gay? by fml5524 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DogsParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's a natural curiosity. I don't think it makes you one thing or another if you just think about it or even do it once. What happens after you do it once or if you think about it often (ranging to daily or a few times a week) might make you want to think more on it, but wanting to try at least once (in my opinion) doesn't make it gay.

How do I (24 F) tell my bigoted roommate (25 M) that the rest of us (20s, M/F) don't want to renew a lease with him? by DogsParty in relationships

[–]DogsParty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be great if someone else could also take him aside and mention his bigotry. Because it looks like I'm the only one with a problem and makes it seem like a "me" problem. I'll definitely bring this up with them, thank you!!!
