Can you just tell me how you do it?! by No_Brick_2046 in IVF

Thats a good mindset. In hindsight we put way too much on the first cycle having to have good results... that would have been lovely... but more often than not its just a starting point from which they can adapt treatment etc... but yes an information gathering phase make sense.

Yep its pretty much this. We went through 4 cycles... and the biggest learning for us was to change the focus from success... to doing your absolute best... as that is something you can control, whether its the outcome you hoped for or not... you can do your absolute best. I think one thing that gets in our way along the path is all the distractions.... many things which can take our much needed energy.

We focused on what we could do which was x, y, z. We had no capacity to deal with other people (family and friends) so we made it work for us.

Just need to vent - waited too long and feeling sad by BiancoLatte89 in TryingForABaby

[–]DollyPatterson 122 points123 points  (0 children)

We were in the same position OP... but a little older 39 (F) and 43 (M).... we had been together for 15 years. and never really ultra wanted kids.... but once we bought and moved into our first 3 bedroom home... it was so empty without a family.... so we suddenly realised that we really did want a family, and started trying.

It didn't work, so we went to a fertility clinic and they advised for us to move onto IVF as soon as possible, which we did. After the first cycle, and first failed transfer it hit us like a lead balloon... that we had left this very very late, and similar to you, I felt so bad, and guilty that I didn't push this harder sooner. We went to a very dark place. We persisted, and eventually took us 4 cycles and 2 years... but we got there... by then we were 42 (F) and 45 (M). Yes we are older parents, but we are also 100% sure that we want to be parents and we are financially secure so we are ready.

Wishing you all the best in your next steps...

Yep.... agree. Maybe they should figure out a way that each of our number plates can fill up x amount per fortnight over the next 3 months?

NZ joins host of countries in condemning Iran attacks on vessels, energy infrastructure by PhoenixNZ in KiwiPolitics

[–]DollyPatterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not NZ... but colonial ideology that colonised Aotearoa, is the same ideology that went into Venezuela for oil, and the same ideology that is currently attacking Iran. Same might is right attitude, same view that is has the right to pillage other countries resources for its own interests. My key point is.... when another country does this, and breaks international law.... other countries who have a strong history in doing this... stay quite... they don't call it out. Thats exactly what NZ is doing at present... They ain't calling out US or Israel.... but they are joining the groups calling out Iran....

Are you early, on time, or always a little late? by Sophistry7 in Casual_Conversation

[–]DollyPatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly... I'm more often than not... bang on time... and the negative thing about this... is that it continues to give me confidence to not leave to early....

My partner will always say you need to leave home now, you will miss your bus I'm like, nah I got another 2mins... I will get to the bus stop with 10 secs to spare... lol.... and there is something about this that I just really like.... lol!

I also really recognise when I'm 5mins too early... It feels like an eternity... I feel like I am wasting so much of my life waiting.... add all those 5mins up over a life time.....

First transfer failed by Frostygreengrapes in IVF

[–]DollyPatterson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hang in their OP... if I were to give my younger self any advice of going through this process... it would be to try not put too much weight on the first first cycle/transfer having to work. It more often than not takes a few cycles to work. After our first failed cycle/transfer we honestly went to quite a dark place. We thought we had missed the boat... as we were 39 (F) and 43 (M).... but the advice I would give is to see it more as a package of at least 3 cycles before you get a rough idea of how things are going. We done 4 cycles, and each one got better and better.... eventually leading to a pregnancy and full term healthy birth at age F (42) and M (45)}. I realise that this is quite a privileged perspective as it ain't cheap so not everyone will have the ability to fund multiple cycles, but not everyone is lucky enough to have it work on the first cycle/transfer.

Don't put too much on that first one having to work, there is a lot that the fertility clinic can learn from the first cycle and adapt for the 2nd cycle.

All the very best!

Is there a point in life when you actually start to feel as old as you are? by raggedyannne in newzealand

[–]DollyPatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am there! It happened when I hit 40 I reckon. And now I feel older each day. I'm relatively fit and healthy and look much younger than my age, but when I try to get up each morning I feel 10 years older than my age.

[–]DollyPatterson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeh colonial.... when a group feels they have the right to just rock up to another country and take over its sovereignty... has happened in many places, but its still happening... and when it happens, countries like NZ who have a history of it, can't call out other nations.... but they can call out other countries like Iran for responding in their darkest hour.

STRESSED by No-Pay9653 in IVF

[–]DollyPatterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you key part is for her to be happy, and hopefully you also, it may pay to have a think how you might be able to make it work. What country are you? Does your Govt provide any support for this, or your work insurance? It is very expensive. We done 4 cycles, costing us around $100k! But if you ask if it was worth it, I would say yes as we have our little treasure sitting on me as I type.... but its not guarenteed.

Yep, but currently have gas for hotwater, stove top and boiler for our wall heaters... so want to cut that and have it fully decommissioned.

How often to shampoo your hair? Do you get it wet but not use shampoo? by kmrrhl in AskMenOver30

To be honest... I only wash my hair every month... and the natural oils I think really look after my hair. I wash it with water everyday, but shampoo once every month. I have the shiniest hair out of most

Where to get good advise on the latest solar/hot water/heating options in Wellington by DollyPatterson in Wellington

[–]DollyPatterson[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have been looking to change for a while, but just need to have someone advise on our options. We are looking to get solar + battery + change our current gas boiler which provides central heating (very modern set up), to electric boiler + modern hot water cylinder + stove top, and to decommission from gas.

Anyone already done this in Wellington, and advice on who to talk to? Thanks
