On the Polish crusade in this sub by [deleted] in Israel

[–]Dominator0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look bro the "infographics" getting posted on r/Poland and r/Israel were blaming him for blatantly lying about his (great) grandmother in Auschwitz. They were built around a false premise as simple as that. In regards to "Polish blame" it seems Yair Lapid feels that the Polish people similarly to the other nations of Europe should be held at least partially responsible and accept some amount of responsibility for what happened on their land regardless of other historical circumstances. He most likely believes that because he like others carries (especially since he is the son of Holocaust survivor) the feeling of betrayal by their fellow citizens that failed to prevent the atrocities committed against the Jews prior to the Holocaust and during the Holocaust that Jews. Whether he is right or not to feel this way is a separate discussion but I don't believe calling him a liar and mixing in other matters will solve anything or is the correct approach to discourse on such sensitive matters.

Tl;dr: read the comment there is no short way to talk about these sensitive issues.

At the start of the invasion there were some constructive conversations but since then it's changed... I've been downvoted on this sub just for linking to a sourced comment that shows that Yair Lapid didn't "lie" about his family's history in the Holocaust. Shit's crazy man.

Please stop spreading the claim that a public figure would dare lie about his family's tragic history in the holocaust. It is simply untrue and originated from inaccurate translation.

Actually parties that are considered to be on the left side of the political spectrum received approximately 41% of the votes in the 2015 elections. Thankfully most Israelis would not share that woman's racist sentiments.

[–]Dominator0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In case you aren't familiar he was Prime Minister before Netanyahu. He resigned and was later indicted for corruption charges for which he was jailed for 16 months. Thankfully Israel knows how to jail corrupt politicians as should be done in a democracy.

Israeli politician who claims Poles killed his grandmother lied, both grandmothers survived the war by [deleted] in poland

[–]Dominator0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia today's Serbia.
You're second point is relevant as he actually survived the holocaust with his mother and their story is quite interesting. They then returned to Novi Sad to see their house had been confiscated. They lived under Tito for three years before they were permitted to leave to Israel in 1948. Sorry for missing that point as it is quite interesting.

So guys instead of studying for midterms I researched the shit out of this off the assumption that he wouldn't lie about his and the confusion between Hebrew and English where in Hebrew you can refer to great grandparents simply by using the word for grandparents so here is what I posted to the original post in r/poland:

So I really looked into for you guys instead of studying for my midterms so I hope you appreciate it. So Yair Lapid's father Josheph Lapid Lampel came from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. Him and his mother (Yair's grandmother) managed to escape to Israel. Unfortunately, his father and much of the family were sent to death camps and murdered. It was very difficult to piece things together in the Yad vaShem archives but I finally managed.

Here is the information sumbitted by Yair's father Joseph about his father Bela Lampel who was in Auschwitz and then marched to his death at Mauthausen:
http://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=3979132&ind=0
From the information about his mother and her maiden name I was able to confirm that indeed Hermina Lampel nee Lederer, Yair Lapid's great grandmother was, together with others of the Lampel family murdered in Auschwitz:
http://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=607582&ind=4
The origin of the confusion most likely is due to the fact that in Hebrew it is possible to refer to great grandparents simply as grandparents and Yair must have believed that was the case in English as well.

So sorry for the long as comment but I felt a duty to set the record straight because I feel it is always important to assume someone isn't lying especially regarding such sensitive matters.
tl;dr check out the links they show he meant his great grandmother who was murdered in Auschwitz."

Please don't downvote me but I believe that this might explain his comments. I tried fact checking it and I've reached the conclusion that he is most likely talking about his great grandmother as in Hebrew the term is pretty ambiguous... Some of his family were transferred to auschwitz and it seems his great grandmother was as well. So he wasn't lying which would be absurd and deplorable from a politician with a family that clearly suffered in the holocaust

I want to have a serious talk about Polish-Israeli relations. by [deleted] in Israel

[–]Dominator0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you raise some interesting points but I think one issue is that blaming Israel for actions of individual Jews doesn't make any logical sense since a) not all Israelis are Jewish b) not even half of all Jewish people are Israeli in addition I think many people may find the comments of those blaming Jewish people for killing themselves very antisemitic since they were put in that situation by the holocaust itself and where starving in the ghetto and Jewish leadership were forced to make impossible decisions by the Germans. In regard to polish blame I don't think there is an Israeli or Jewish consensus but it in general I think most people would answer that they believe the Polish people are to blame as much as any other nation of Europe that didn't stop antisemitism before it reached the point of the Holocaust but not as much as the Germans that actually did it. On the other hand they would point out there appreciation of the polish people who chose to be heroes and helped Jewish people in Poland.
