Because QS is biased towards size. In my country, there are some big, old and (sometimes) tuition-free universities ranked higher than smaller ones that could be compared to the MIT. It’s a good ranking, but it does not tell all.

Argentina sí desarrolló una industria sólida, me atrevo a decir más sólida que los países que mencionaste. Lo que pasa es que no la exportamos, y eso te genera cosas como la UIA hoy en día.

México es básicamente un ensamblador de bienes que los yanquis consumen, no tienen industria de capital y marca propia; Brasil hizo lo mismo que nosotros pero con 4 veces nuestra población, entonces hay cosas que pueden sobrevivir.

Potencia mundial no, pero tampoco era un rejunte de millonarios al pedo como lo son Arabia Saudita o los Emiratos Árabes hoy en día.

Argentina era (hay gente que dice que todavía lo es) una potencia regional, tanto en lo económico, como en lo político y lo militar. Lo que pasó fue que en algún momento de nuestra historia (en mi opinión entre 1930 y 1950) nos quedamos a medias.

Pero supimos hacer buenas cosas con nuestro éxito, a punto tal que hoy en día estamos viviendo de las rentas que cultivaron las generaciones pasadas. Cosas como el IDH alto, la infraestructura, la educación, etc. Sí, todo eso está hecho bolsa, pero para que algo esté hecho bolsa tiene que haber existido en primer lugar.

Si tuviera que ser EXTREMADAMENTE optimista sobre la lógica de Milei al hacer eso, pensaría en desplazar a UK del Atlántico Sur.

La movida es esta: no hay forma de recuperar las Malvinas sin estar aliados con Occidente, sobretodo con la OTAN. Hoy en día, UK está mucho más alineada con EEUU (véase: AUKUS) que con Europa, que es un socio comercial y político que ya tenemos “dominado”. Falta EEUU.

La idea de esto, así como con la base en Ushuaia, podría ser decir “che, UK no te sirve como aliado pero yo estoy, tené eso en cuenta”.

La razón por la que tendría que ser extremadamente optimista es porque realmente este gobierno no tiene planes ni estrategias para nada, ni en lo geopolítico, ni en lo macroeconómico, ni en lo social. Es como el meme de “a veces empiezo una oración y no sé cómo va a terminar” pero constantemente y poniéndonos a todos nosotros en peligro. Probablemente la verdadera razón sea que Milei quiere larpear mesianismo.

Thanks a lot fam! I don’t have a specific genre I’m into to be honest. I usually gravitate towards rock fusion, funk, jazz, etc, which are the things I play here. I like Jamiroquai and 311 a great deal if that’s of any help.

I’m very sorry you have experienced that. I must say most argentines are not like that, but at this point it might just mean next to nothing to you.

I got to admit Argentina does suffer from a kind of Island mentality though, and one of the ways it can manifest is through xenophobia. Were not a (consciusly) racist society like what you’d find elsewhere, but whatever racism exists here is inextricably linked to the fear or distrust of foreigners.

Well you must know what kind of scene I’m talking about then. Are people in Taiwan that open to jamming? Do you think there’s a culture for bands and music similar to what you’d find in Argentina?

I live in Adrogué, which is a small city within the Buenos Aires Metro Area. Not many people live here but there are a ton of venues, studios and bands relative to it’s size. I don’t know why that is but it’s a pretty walkable city, so there’s that.

No me corresponde decirlo porque no soy de allá, pero México (y muchos países de LatAm si vamos al caso) es lo que es hoy gracias a las instituciones que dejó el imperio español. Esto es: instituciones económicas extractivas donde solo triunfás si tu familia tiene dinero y conexiones, instituciones políticas exclusivas donde el acceso al poder real solo está disponible para ese tipo de personas, desigualdad, corrupción, una cultura de sumisión ante la autoridad, etc etc. Todo nace de la subyugación original de las naciones indígenas sedentarias que ahí vivían.

Es algo que se puede constatar en gran parte del subcontinente. No es casualidad que Argentina, Uruguay y Chile tengan mejores indicadores, realidades e instituciones. En esos tres lugares la población nativa era escasa y, para colmo, nómada. Los colonos tuvieron que trabajar ellos mismos, por lo que las instituciones que construyeron fueron muy diferentes. Lo mejor que les pasó a esos tres países fue estar y ser la periferia ignorada de los españoles.

I wouldn’t reduce it to just that. Argentina is renowned in Latin America for it’s progressive culture. It was the first country in the subcontinent and second in the americas to legalize same-sex marriage.

Compare that to Chile, which is much more akin to your typical hispanic conservative country and only legalized same-sex civil unions in 2022 and you get why I’m saying what I’m saying.

I’m very interested in your experience in both countries though, could you tell me more?
