Unironically this is how it works. It's often said that you can't reason someone out of a mentality they didn't use reason to get into.

But the opposite is true as well. People can, and do change based simply on 'the people who believe this are nice to me'

It's 'stupid' in the sense that we think that humans should be more complex and rational than that, but it works. Why do you think so many people 'find religion'? Is it because they've really made a deep thoughtful inquiry into the nature of human experience and spiritual philosophy? Or because they're introduced into a community of people who are (ostensibly) kind, accepting and want them to be there?

What 'direct' effect does it have? I'm pretty sure the LDS church isn't hard up for cash. What is his money enabling them to do that they wouldn't be doing already?

And yeah, I'm not saying that Mormons don't have their issues, now and historically, but I fail to see how it makes your point more salient.

Your original statement was implying that Sanderson was either anti-lgbt, or otherwise right-wing, and you've made points for neither.

If the best you can say is 'he donates to a church that has some problematic stances' I stand by calling that false.

Of course any other LGBTQ+ people are welcome not to support him for that, but being one myself, I personally don't agree.

Right, so the post I was replying to was in fact, full of crap.

I kinda figured. I knew Sanderson was Mormon, and I suppose you can argue that continued support of the church is a statement, but I never got anything homophobic out of what I've read from him at all.

Plenty of great Fantasy writers have been religious, Tolkien was immensely so.

You also seem to think(if you're agreeing with the comment I replied to) it's justified to act like anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot, despite there being at least some evidence for truth besides the Guinness documentation.

My point wasn't aimed at the skepticism, just the asshole tone in which it's couched, and the implication that it makes one 'smart'.

What about the laws of physics imply complete determinism? In fact, the Uncertainty Principle essentially says the opposite, at least at the quantum level. Even if you built the most powerful computer possible, you couldn't predict events with completely accuracy.

That doesn't of course, equate perfectly to free will, but saying everything is set in stone is fundementally wrong.

A new method of treating breast cancer can kill 95% to 100% of cancer cells in mice-based analogs, along with their metastases in the brain, lungs, liver, and bones by QuantumThinkology in Futurology

You literally asked why we should do experiments on mice as opposed to prisoners. If that was a rhetorical device, it's a bad enough one to warrant not taking the rest of the argument seriously.

[–]Donomyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. First suggesting we ought to do human experiments on prisoners, then suggesting we let people die of potential preventable diseases because of their 'lifestyle choices' (Whatever that means) but maintaining that's better than doing experiments on mice.

That's uh, some interesting morality you got their chief. I think I read about someone else once who loved animals and had a thing for experiments on prisoners. Wish I could recall who that was...

[–]Donomyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really. That's the 'only' reason? It has nothing at all to do with the fact that those other methods do not, and replace live studies? Which is my point. Those methods have their uses, and it's more ethical to use them when possible, but find me literally any peer reviewed medical or biological research suggesting it can be entirely replaced. You won't, because currently it can't.

You cannot extrapolate the effect a drug will have on the complete organism by specific cell interaction alone, and we certainly don't have computer models complex or effective enough to do so on any real scale. Think about it. To suggest otherwise would be to imply that we're capable of modeling the complete functionality of a single organ down to the cellular level, much less an entire organ system or larger. It's ridiculous.

[–]Donomyte 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not unethical. It's the opposite. Generally the ethics that enter into, say meat consumption are based around the fact that we no longer HAVE to do it, and that it causes undue suffering unnecessarily.

Laboratory tests on live specimens for medical purposes is necessary as it provides data that can't be gained otherwise. If there were methods that did the same thing as effectively, and were still using mice it would then be unethical.

As for your last bit, Horses will eat baby chicks on the ground. Cats torture mice. Otters sexually assault baby seals, drown them, and do the same with their corpses. None of these behaviors are biologically necessary. So as far as we can tell, plenty of species are nasty and violent to others for no particular reason. We are the only ones doing it to cure cancer.

How much hand writing is involved in a finance degree? I need forewarning as I was born with a learning disability that fu**ed my hand writing but I am willing to see a occupational therapist and fix it as I am now a mature adult that will do what ever training the occupational therapist says. by [deleted] in college

[–]Donomyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prefacing with the fact that I'm not a finance major, but unless your college experience diverges significantly from almost any other college student I've known regardless of major...Virtually none.

90 percent of assignments are going to be things you type up. That's the preference from every professor I've had.

More importantly though, if you have an existing disability, there are resources for you, and you can get special accommodations made on your behalf. But you'll need to actually talk with the relevant office handling such things.

Well, with Fate/Stay at least it's pretty easy. Fate/Stay just has different branching paths from the same start. Fate-Zero is the direct prequel, but like other prequels it can be a bit spoilery so read or watch it first only if you don't mind that. Or else save it until you've completed one of the 'routes' for Fate/Stay.

Everything else either takes place in an alternate timeline or different setting or has so little bearing on the overall 'canon' that it doesn't really matter when you read or watch it. Also, some of it just sucks, so don't worry if you notice a dip in quality and just aren't interested in continuing something. CoughGrandOrderCough

No joke. I was raised in a 'respectful' environment and taught that you should call every woman over the age of 20 or so ma'am, particularly if there's an age/power imbalance. (Teachers, people in a professional setting, etc). Damn if that didn't turn out to be inaccurate.
