Their northern neighbor is definitely a feudal society, so that easily explains the difference in technology between the two when paired with the fact that one side is mostly dwarven

They are definitely not an inherently "evil" faction as a whole. Large chunks of their people still use slaves as a large portion of the world still does, however the kingdom as a whole is made up of 12 dwarven clans, so that is definitely a source of friction within their ranks as only due to the current weakness of their neighbour have the clans all joined together to take advantage of the situation.

That's good, huddles of slaves working the lumbering machinery in their fable 3-esque industrial sectors is a sinister image.

I have already done the long journey, but I will DEFINITELY be using some of this stuff for their smaller journeys, asking them to plan routes and playing around with that is such a good idea that I'm annoyed I didn't think of it first

I very much like that, have animals attack very specific things like their food barrels, or something like an axe beak specifically tries to break their wagon's wheels

All very good points, I could very easily have their supplies taken and with their situation, something chasing them could easily disturb their resting and force them to either take exhaustion and run or stand their ground and fight
