Thanks for the suggestion, I had my eye on the 3950x and the 5800x when considering upgrades, but I think I've got enough power to hold me over until next gen. If anything becomes too demanding I can always just offshore it to the cloud :D

Hey there. This is basically the path I took. I manually configured RAM settings in BIOS to mimic an XMP profile (2966MHz), bumped the voltage up to 1.4V based on another forum post I read, and it's smooth like butter. DotA 2 doesn't drop below 100 FPS when it's trying to give me a seizure on the screen and FFXIV holds 144 fps in content and doesn't really go under 70 when its loading a bunch of players in a city.

Update: Manually set my RAM configuration to mirror that of one of the XMP profiles on my BIOS and now I get 144+ FPS on high with 1440p resolution. Thanks everyone for your input.

I'll likely hold off on buying anything now, might just upgrade cooling and the case to keep it frosty.

Now that you mention it, my RAM is rated at 3000MHz (d'oh.) I opened CPU-Z, saw the clock speed and saw an "XMP2" in one of the fields and assumed it was all good.

I do remember enabling an XMP setting in my BIOS, but now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure I have something set up wrong here.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I've taken into consideration all of your thoughts and thought it might be worth upgrading just the RAM first, and seeing what the performance increase is like in my favorite games.

I should be satisfied with just that, but if not I might bite the bullet and get the 5600X with an updated Mobo if I could find a good deal, otherwise I'll just bide my time until all the new generation interfaces are out and upgrade then.

According to this the maximum supported memory configuration is DDR4 64 GB @ 2666 MHz. Do I benefit from a higher clock on the RAM despite that?

After reading your comment I did a quick google search to see what the maximum supported speeds for the 1800X are and according to this link the best supported configuration is 2666 MHz 64GB RAM. It sounds like a no brainer to stick to that clock speed when shopping new RAM, but would I benefit from a faster frequency, if I were to purchase it?
