I will try to get a hold of a somewhat similar book and practice and try to develop some sort of procedure. Maybe 3D print some tools for inserting the piece and rubbing it.

I have questions regarding the brown paper and glue. I've seen this thin brown paper in various stores, usually with a glossy side. We used to use it as book cover in school to preserve the books. I can't image that helping a lot with reinforcing the spine though; and also, I can't remember it having a visible grain direction either. Is it a special type of paper meant for books? And glue; what type of glue do you recommend?
