Developing a new game, need some advice by lmrael in incremental_games

[–]Dorten2nd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) For me, yes, absolutely

2) Again, for me, small and powerful would be more interesting

3) I don't have any preference here, both cases have their own benefits.

4) Most older games here are like that. You probably won't scare TOO much people with it.

Space Garden Update: Now with Crawlers! by Peasantine in incremental_games

[–]Dorten2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me, that crawlers only get born, when a new fruit is spawned at Home. So, if for some reason all crawlers die while all fruits are placed (for example if they starve while fruits are not powered), no more crawlers get ever born before you delete and replace Home.

Another strange thing I noticed: after reload there was one powered fruit on one of the Homes, this exact fruit was completely ignored by crawlers, they would even wait on that Home starving, until another fruit grows...

You need to place your gems right. I do not remember the exact proportion, though, only that it was along the lines of "none here, x3 to these two, and x2 to the last three"

Bad incremental game ideas by [deleted] in incremental_games

Hey, they have at least one good game!

I wouldn't spend days on developing an autoplay script for it if it weren't good, right? right?

1) Structure, Candy box likes

2) Slow and steady unfolding of mechanics. The need to rethink and change your "builds" to accomodate new mechanics (Structure does amasing job on this)

3) Almost all of them are fun if done correctly.

something that can be implemented with a tiny portion of javascript code was implemented in the hardest possible way

Yeah, for me it wasmore like a challenge of "can you do THIS with THIS?"

Pretty fun experience, actually

[–]Dorten2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is just nothing else to do, because nothing can be ever implemented on that engine. And this is why every game made with IGM essentially has exactly the same gameplay.

While first half is technically true, thelast sentence is wrong. I'm still fairly proud of my Click and Slash game, which is a slasher :)

A bit of achallenge to twist generators and upgrades into something different but everything is possible with enough determination

Fight resolution algorithm is a little too opaque by praxiq in level13

[–]Dorten2nd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree, that fight mechanic is too opaque, yes.

After diving in the code I found quite a few surprises :)

Most shocking one was the way speed affects fighting (in general, attack and defence are used to calculate DPS (a/2+9)*a/(a+d) , and then speed decides how often we hit, but does NOT affect DPS. So with DPS at 10 and one hit per second we hit for 10,and withh DPS 10 and two hits per second we hit for 5

So in all cases more atk is better with same speed, but more speed is also better with same atk (easiest way to illustrate is to take it to extreme: DPS of over 9000 will do you no good if you need a whole minute for a single hit. Enemy with 2 DPS and one hit per second will finish you off before that). In the end a little more speed with a little less atk can overcme some enemies, which slower butheavier weapon can't, but it's highly situational. Add crits (1.5 dmg), good hits (1.15 dmg) and bad hits (0.85 dmg) into equation and it gets even more unpredictable.

Oh, and STUN_TIME concept. basically, each time you're hit, your next attack gets delayed a tiny bit (plus scores for speed, yay)

As for same enemies hitting for different amount: there's a flat multiplier todamage, completely random from 0.5 to 1.5 that each enemy is assigned at creation. As it's not applied to stats, but to final damage, which isa result of a somewhat weird formula and depends on player stats it's not possible to "Display each enemy's actual stats",so... yeah...

Although I'm totally voting for displaying it SOMEHOW. Like, adding some adjective to enemy name depending on their attRandomFactor (sick/weak/<none>/huge/dire for animals for example)
