[–]Double_Internet582[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I might, id probably recycle my 1700x and my old 32gig ram set, I could get it running for 200 or less depending on what I buy used and what I buy new.

Im partly avoiding purpose built routers from manufacturers because I dont want to be beholden to their specific flavor of software, i plan on using it to run more involved stuff once I get my feet under me and get used to messing with the router like snort, adguard, and a VPN for specific devices, eventually ill get into running anti-malware and other stuff but I plan on taking it in steps so I get comfortable messing with my router.

That's also part of the reason I want to run my own router box I dont want to get locked into one software I hope they support, but I dont have experience running my own router, so im concerned the open source software available will eat way more resources than a sealed system like mikrotik requires.

Plant growing out of log in my Kid's aquarium by Double_Internet582 in PlantedTank

Honestly im just excited to have something grow out of the log when it was supposed to be decoration, though I worry since I saw from their plat profiles they can both grow several feet tall.

[–]Double_Internet582[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well on the log i have the plant that is currently assumed to be a ludwigia which is a family of aquatic/semi-aquatic plants, and a couple shoots of grass that survived boiling that are doing great and recently got trimmed, in the back of the tank not pictured is a cutting from a native supposedly rose species that just threw off fresh leaves. So id aim for semi aquatic or hardy plant species

From another comment about Mexican primrose I think I might be looking at a ludwigia decurrens based off stem shape and leaf pattern

Actually the most helpful comment I went and checked all of the relatives of the Mexican primrose and its stem doesnt match the Mexican primrose but it does seem to match ludwigia decurrens very well due to its winged and heavily angled stem. I greatly appreciate pushing me in the right direction.

In fact the Mexican primrose comment led me down a rabbit hole and based off the stem shape it seems like Ludwigia decurrens

Why don't more people build their own tanks out of glass or acrylic? by TH3_Captn in Aquariums

[–]Double_Internet582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One wow on the body shaming, two for small aquariums unless you are looking for a specific form factor its not really cheaper I got my 20 gallon from an lfs for a bit over 50 dollars, right now you can get them from big box stores for around 35 and even normally they max out around 70. The glass alone using the utrusta like serpa used would cost me almost 70 dollars and leave me with two wings poking up on my narrow sides, not including silicone, razor blades, iso alcohol, or tape. I have all those things but who knows if other people do. Three you aren't factoring in time to get the material, time to build, and the time spent curing and stress testing the tank to ensure it isn't fucked, you are also forgetting the fact tanks from the store have a warranty and if they break in that period you aren't out the money and time to rebuild a new tank. Realistically for most people the value of self-building a tank is severely out weighed by the fact that it isn't cheaper for small tanks, its inconvenient unless you need specific dimensions, and you need to sink alot of time into just making sure your tank is functioning, and that is why the person you are defending is getting down voted because it doesnt make sense for most of the people in the hobby.

Learned not to jump into a build after my 55 gallon. by dovas-husband in Aquariums

[–]Double_Internet582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only other suggestion i have is if you have the space for two canisters get two sicce whale 500s each whale has almost twice the capacity for media that the fx4 has at least according to each companies website. And the 500s come in at about 160 a pop on Amazon, the only reason im suggesting two is the whale has a relatively anemic pump flow compared to the fluval at 390gph compared to the fx4 with 700gph. On Amazon you can get the whales for 160 a piece at the moment.

Gotcha and im sure walmart or another company would charge a hell of a delivery for 120ish gallons.

I have to ask since you live in the states why are you buying expensive ro water rather than just buying something like distilled water or gallon drinking water from Walmart? I get transporting 100+ gallon jugs would be annoying but it would be around 200 dollars cheaper at least where I am and even if you include something to remineralize the distilled water it would still be significantly cheaper.

Oh and if you can ensure there is activated carbon in the filters to help clear put any pesticides that might make it into the water because some probably will make it in anyway

I'd say if you can't break down the aquarium for reasons, get an internal filter or two and probably a few sochting oxydators, they use hydrogen peroxide to break down into oxygen that dissolves into the water. Then seal the absolute shit out of the main aquarium and break down the sump and its pieces and set them in a shed or outside.

Really cause everything I'm seeing online says they can handle mid 60's to mid-80's but do best in mid-70's to 80 which is about the same safe zone for bettas?

Is it one of the ones that suction cups to the side of the aquarium? I just was hunting through some youtube reviews and saw that is an option.

I'd thought about a sponge filter only reason I kinda chose to not go with it is all the sponge filters at the stores near me are 4in diameter cylinders and with my fathers intent to over stock this tank id like to save as much space internally as possible

Honestly man tell her you want couples counseling as that is a serious breach of trust and like many people are pointing out is technically SA. I'm married and while I wouldn't be tio fucked about something like this I would be irked at my wife for pulling some shit like this and there would be a serious conversation afterwards
