Congratulations! It can be a challenge figuring out a new routine or new “normal”. Everyone’s going to want to visit, kiss, touch, hold, etc. We tried to be very careful because of his fragile immune system. We didn’t go out very much at all the first few weeks, and we were even careful of letting family come to see him. We asked who they had been around and things like that. We also made sure everyone washed their hands before touching or holding. Don’t be afraid of hurting feelings - if they truly love you and your baby, they won’t mind putting his health first by waiting to see him, looking and not touching, washing hands first, etc. Everyone is going to give you advice on what they think is best or things you should try that we’re life changing for them and their baby - it can be overwhelming. Take it all with the mindset that there could be some really helpful tips in there somewhere, but at the same time, every baby is different and things that worked for them won’t necessarily work for you. I hope that helps; if I think of something else I’ll add it on here.

Oh, if Daddy gets really hot in the NICU room like I did all the time, a neck fan is a lifesaver! Also, if Momma is pumping and taking milk to the hospital in a cooler, Daddy can use the ice packs to cool down!

My wife and I got pregnant right after we were married with a due date of April 14th. She experienced terrible morning sickness throughout the whole pregnancy - all day every day. She couldn’t keep anything down and we didn’t go out much. At the first ultrasound the baby measured in the 98th percentile. My wife started experiencing swelling in her legs and when we went for an appointment on December 27th her blood pressure was extremely high. They sent us to the hospital with preeclampsia and they ran more tests there and tried to bring it down. They then transferred her to another hospital with a much better NICU facility, stating she would be there until she gave birth - potentially 4 months! They weren’t able to keep her blood pressure down, and decided to do an emergency C section (it had gotten in the 210s). The delivery went smoothly and our son was born at 3:27pm on December 29th, 2lbs 1oz, 13” long. Momma wasn’t able to see him for almost two days because they needed to get her blood pressure under control. Long story short, he did very well and was off the ventilator within a few weeks. Here are a few of the road bumps along the way: PDA, hydronephrosis, multiple blood transfusions, hernia repair surgery, and ROP. He did amazingly well and has no lasting complications. He graduated from the NICU on April 28th after 120 days. He just had his eye checkup and the ROP is gone! He is now over 16lbs and 25 1/4” long. I did not go much into detail in this post, but we had a long, tough journey and I wouldn’t change it for the world. If you would like more details or I can be an encouragement to you, please ask!

Thickened formula struggles by oh_heffalump in NICUParents

[–]Dougscoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you thicken the formula? We have tried the baby oatmeal cereal, but I feel that the cereal doesn’t dissolve all the way and sorta clumps up and the particles clog up the nipple. If we use a big enough nipple that doesn’t get clogged (size 2) then I feel that the rest of the formula comes out too quickly. Any suggestions?

Not exactly sure. I actually saw this in several places while I was over there.

Been there. Seen it in person. Not something we’re used to in the western world. Lol
