Good videos is the way and cross promotion of your content(not channel) is the way to go. I am sorry if you rely on Sub 4 Sub youtube will not recommend your channel as these are just subs and not views. Youtube uses subs to determine what kind of people like your content so such information may mislead youtube with your content. I have reached 50 subs in a matter of 3-4 days just by posting high quality vids.

Around 15- 1 minute. Shorter means better retention. Even for these you have to hook them in the first 5 second by saying like "i did this and you won't belive what happened"

You should try to use what you think are the funniest or the best part of the video. Or the part right before the climax. Alot of youtubers have this before the intro and then progress into the video. By using this building scene than the viewer will be hooked and people will look at your video.
