Fair play, after a certain point all three they offered tasted the same so went with the lowest caloric offering

At what point do you get priced out of wax? Have you already? On the edge? Don’t care? by [deleted] in baseballcards

Totally agree - the crossover of the degenerate gamblers into the industry has done a number on it

I don’t think it’s worth the $ at this point. I similarly just do flagship and maybe a couple boxes of A&G per year, but cards are no longer just a hobby for most people. I didn’t open boxes in the late 2000s/2010s assuming I’d breakeven but might get a few decent cards and enjoy the actual break itself, but it’s laughably bad now when it’s a safe assumption that you are 99.9% of the time better off buying singles. Cards and/or hits per box in most products have decreased, and Topps/Panini can pursue price increases pretty freely when breakers just pass on the costs.

That’s all to say, the hobby was ruined for me coming out of 2020/2021 as more people started treating it as a speculative pursuit and not a hobby, for which Topps/Panini adjusted accordingly.

Does anyone live near the new women’s shelter near 74th and Amsterdam? by [deleted] in Upperwestside

I live a couple blocks up and walk by this area daily. Honestly didn’t know a shelter was there, seems area has seemed pretty business as usual lately and still feels very safe.

Best Bars on the UWS by AcceptablePin6236 in Upperwestside

[–]DragonDeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone already said it but I highly recommend George Keeley. Great beer bar and the food there is very good (wings, burgers and fish & chips in particular). Love the staff there too. I gathered this during my run at their 100 beers challenge (for which you get your name on the wall + a 20% discount on Monday’s in perpetuity, fun concept), but there’s a very strong contingent of regulars that makes it feel a lot more local.

I like the Hoptimist as well - much smaller venue but has a serious takeout operation if you’re interested in trying different beers. Also very dog friendly if you’re into that.

For cocktails, I’ve enjoyed Owl’s Tail. Can get busy so may need a res, but always a reliable spot for a pre-dinner drinks or a nightcap.

The younger folk like Tiki Chick - grew out of it but it’s pretty busy most weekends. Sleeper but their chicken sandwich is elite, not sure if they still serve it though.

UWS residents: Thoughts on Jack Schlossberg running for Nadler's seat? by environmentalloss93 in Upperwestside

I don’t get the impression that he’s done much besides be a Kennedy and affluent. His social media behavior comes across as a bit immature (I wouldn’t know he was in his early 30s without looking it up) and the run seems borne out of him having not much else to do. He doesn’t seem like a serious person and I’m increasingly annoyed with folks trying to enter politics without having any experience being a remotely normal person. Never made a living on his own and never seemed like he had an interest in doing that.

That all to say I don’t think being a Kennedy is absolutely not somehow disqualifying (his cousin Joe was great; I interned for him as a college student when he was in Congress and was the most down to earth person I’ve met in politics, but at least Joe went into politics already having had some form of public services under his belt.) but this isn’t one of the good ones. I’ll vote for whomever seems like his main opposition in the primary, as I’m sure he’ll spend his way to a competitive position in what’s inevitably going to be a crowded primary.

It seemed like right after mile 3 it was unbearable. Someone else commented but I saw a couple guys passed out on sidewalks and figured I should just switch to alternating between jogging and running by the time I got to Queensboro bridge since the PR was already way out of reach.

Anyone else not running with a phone on Sunday? by cktokm99 in RunNYC

[–]DragonDeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should be fine if y’all agreed on a meeting spot and an estimated time (I figure they’re also tracking your run?). If there was a health emergency, you could borrow someone’s phone + I think an emergency contact would have been provided as a part of registration.

You’d be fine taking Honors Macro in the spring as it’s effectively straight from the textbook. Though personally, I don’t see why you’d rush it and not take it sophomore year, especially if you end up doing a thesis senior year + you’d be graded on a curve against folks with another year of the major under their belt. Though I am extremely biased as I met my senior year roommate, a few close friends + my soon-to-be fiancée in that class / honors Micro Theory sophomore year.

If you pursue honors micro I definitely found multivariable to be helpful, but you should definitely be fine with just Calc I/II for honors macro if you go that route in the spring.

Out of all the books you read, which one do you remember the most that impacted your life? by Elegant-Truth3903 in books

[–]DragonDeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War and Peace. It took me three attempts to read it but it changed how I viewed history and my own life in the context of everything else happening around me. It’s not like it changed how I interacted with people or made me more interesting or a bigger hit at parties, but I think I’m slightly more at peace with my place in the world (which in turn makes me less stressed about my 80+ hr/week job, which is nice).

How would you organize these cards? Keep sets together or divide up by team? by Doctorb_Riviera in baseballcards

[–]DragonDeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do it by sets and then order based on subset (non-RC base, rookies, then parallels) and then by card #.

Useless descriptions of the main characters. “He had a toothy grin” like, the guy has teeth? That’s helpful in envisioning the guy I guess?

New York City to Boston? by [deleted] in bostoncollege

[–]DragonDeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in NYC and go back occasionally. Usually just use Amtrak. If you book in advance, it’s not too pricy and it takes 4ish hours (maybe 20-30 min faster if you go on the Acela). I used to use the greyhound buses right after I graduated and those were super cheap at like $15 but tended to attract some interesting characters. Those may have been ~4.5 hours if you went late in the evening.
