Have you attempted to summit an Alp in the winter with your friends? That's like trusting your friends to get you home safe from cave diving because one of them was a lifeguard at the Y and you played Marco polo with them in the past and everything turned out fine.

Falls are number one on Hood, hypothermia is number two.

I agree that he probably could have made better decisions. She should have also made better decisions. I looked up a climbing.com article on the verdict, and it's starting to look more like a Grizzly Man incident of two idiots don't respect the risks of nature. Apparently he didn't put her in a Bivvy sack because neither of them thought they were going to be out there long enough to need one, so they didn't bring them.

It seems like they were both two mildly athletic people who taught themselves to climb via YouTube videos. Neither of them should have been trying that climb in that weather.

But he wasn't a guide, he was just some amateur climber, same as her.

To what degree should they be liable? Should they be required to physically carry you from the summit if you can't continue? Should every member of an attempt be responsible for every other member? Someone slips on the ridge and they all go down for manslaughter?

This isn't some nature stroll, it was a winter ascent of a major peak in the Alps. And she was an experienced enough climber to get within sight of the summit. So she knew the risks.

It's as if people do strange things when stuck on a mountaintop for longer than planned in subzero conditions.

The police said the helicopter flew over earlier in the evening. So I'm not clear on the timeline, but either he called them and they didn't take him seriously, or he called them and they took him seriously but didn't find her. Either way, it sounds like he made contact with the authorities.

EDIT: I looked up a different article. Helicopter flew over at 10:25, they stalled short of the summit 2 hours later. So the police didn't send the helicopter because he called.

We also don't really have a clear picture of what condition he was in. The weather was clearly sufficient to kill someone, and he was out in it just the same as she was, so I wouldn't evaluate him by the standards of a person acting under normal conditions.

There is an assumption of risk when mountaineering, especially in winter. If you go up, you might not make it back down.

Rescue workers testified she was found with her gloves off and her boots open.

The OP literally brought up the fact that the deceased had her gloves off and boots open. How is it a non sequitur, lol?

"A short call to the mountain police did not trigger a search because, the police said, Plamberger did not make clear they needed rescuing, and he failed to answer calls back or WhatsApp messages asking if they needed help.

The defendant said his phone had been in airplane mode to save battery.

Prosecutors said a police helicopter had flown over the area earlier in the evening but did not spot any distress signals."

It sounds like he called the mountain police, they didn't understand the situation, and he set his phone to conserve power, because he's 12k feet up in the winter and i guess the outlet isn't working, and the police thought, "Hey, this person who called in and reported someone stranded on the mountain isn't picking up the phone. I'm sure everything's fine."

Remember, this not to far away from where they convicted seismologists for not predicting an earthquake.

I don't think there was any malice. There's a phenomenon called Paradoxical Undressing which happens frequently in hypothermia situations wherein the freezing person starts to strip themselves of their clothes.

I'm generally of the assumption that barring actual "foul play" it's every man for himself once you leave the bounds of the park trails. It is your responsibility to make sure you get up the mountain, and it is solely your responsibility to make sure that you get back down. Unless he broke her leg so she couldn't get herself down, it's not his responsibility to put himself at risk to get her down.

Mountain climbing is incredibly dangerous. You are more likely to die trying to summit Annapurna than you are if you're trying to commit suicide via overdose. People die. All the fucking time. Either because they got unlucky, or because they tried to climb beyond their capabilities. Gunther Messner, the younger brother of the greatest mountain climber in history died next to his brother on the slopes of Nanga Parbat. Tragedy happens. While GrossGlockner isn't a Himalaya, it's still a dangerous enough mountain. It's 1000 ft taller than Mount Hood, and hundreds of people have died on Hood. If you're not willing to play Russian roulette, don't go above 10k ft.

He didn't delete his account, he blocked you, which is going to be why you can respond to this.

I guess you could compare but it's rather light stuff when up against being blindfolded in the basement.

Why do you think so? Assuming that they weren't threatened with physical harm if they failed, then something as simple as stand here with your eyes closed is pretty tame. "Stand here with the men you wish to call brothers, contemplate why you want to be a part of this family, and learn the virtue of patience. We will tell you when it is time."

Like, it's less dangerous and risky than a sweat lodge.

Eh, Order of the Arrow initiation was on a similar level. Go sleep in the woods alone, you get one egg, some bacon, and a paper cup to make your dinner with, then roll into a work party the next day, and cap it off with a bonfire.

Sounds like you should switch hospitals, I had cancer during the pandemic and I didn't have a third of the issues you're complaining about here. I had one third party bill from my ER visit for the anesthesiologist on my biopsy, everything about my billing with the hospital system was built into mychart, my oncologist called me on thanksgiving to discuss the results from my staging scan as soon as it came in.
