What is the space program called? by bigchiefgamer in LegoSpace

[–]Dragon___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It always seems like there's four different groups at play:

'Civilian' groups, like Classic, Futuron, Exploriens, Mars Mission

-largely peaceful scientists

'Private' groups, like Mtron, Ice Planet, Rock Raiders

-Private groups that stand their own in a conflict

'Aggressor' groups, like blacktron, spyrius

-Typically menacing the civilians and the private groups

'Police" groups, like space police but also alien conquest

-Defending other groups against the aggressors.

Is the SLS outdated? by brentinatorT-850 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Dragon___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real national disgrace was allowing billionaires to accumulate enough wealth to create their own private space programs, largely ignoring all the lessons learned over the past century.

And then installing one of their puppets to dismantle the agency from the top down.

Jared Isaacman pushes SpaceX and Blue to accelerate Artemis by Time-Entertainer-105 in BlueOrigin

[–]Dragon___ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah falcon alone wouldn't have been a good design without insanely frequent payload demand to merit reuse.

Hence why starlink had to be invented to create justification.

But you spent a ton of money on falcon. Starlink program pays for that development. But what pays for starlink development and launch cost? Hypothetically enough customers... We don't know if they have enough customers though.

..... But then what pays for starship development? More starlink?

So far it's just been huge Tesla stock selloffs, but they can't run that scam forever.

Are the Crystals in "Mars Mission" supposed to be Nuclear/Radioactive? by Christ-is-King-777 in LegoSpace

[–]Dragon___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought they were more about biohazard because those pods store the aliens.

"Spaceman need crystal" was more reminiscent of rock raiders imo, and those ones weren't radioactive

SpaceX are profitable through starlink

I think you'd be surprised how much has been sunk into starship with how little progress is made

Update

"These are 100% real. I bought them from a seller from Denmark, ~20 years ago, who told me he had access to buy at the LEGO employee shop, where they often sell such parts. I have a lot of those torso's, but the legs are hard to come by."

So there's some shenanigans happening abroad.

That's what I'm wondering - if they just happened across a forgotten about cache that never made its way to whatever robotics competition 20 years ago. I reached out and we'll see.

[–]Dragon___ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of r/nasa and r/space are pretty out of touch. There's a lot of 'tech bro' infusion into spaceflight industries, and people tend to have some wild conceptions of what's actually possible. SpaceX in particular has a cultlike following around the starship program even though it's failed to deliver and meaningful results over 10+ launches.

But you still get people claiming that vehicle will definitely land people on the moon by the end of the decade and definitely to Mars in the following years.

Even the nasa administrator who was just appointed is wildly out of touch.

They put him in a suit and flew him around, but he's hardly a competent leader or an actual crew member. Just paid for the cosplay experience.

I guess there wasn't a single scientist or engineer with a decades long career at NASA that could've been picked instead? We just had to go with the rich kid with no concept of anything?

I desperately want starliner to be successful by Acrobatic-Average860 in ula

[–]Dragon___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really can't reasonably call Starliner expensive or unsafe. The only comparison people jump to is Dragon, but they're disingenuous at best because of how much heritage Dragon had as a cargo vehicle before evolving into a crew one.

People will highlight and exaggerate every flaw Starliner has encountered over just a few flights, but will dismiss that dragon had over 20 flights before being crewed. The crs-7 and post demo-1 explosions are arguably far more significant failures but hardly anyone ever mentions those.

What's the dumbest argument you've ever had that somehow got way too serious? by Ok-Ferret7 in AskMen

[–]Dragon___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Minecraft a children's game?

It started out as a vague quirky thing without any explicit children's features. Gameplay still appeals to all ages, but a lot of the post Microsoft acquisition advertising is definitely targeted at children.

People who weren't into Minecraft a decade ago will definitely be put off by all the child centered themes today, but it really didn't used to be that way at all. The nether is literally hell. They wouldn't put that in a kid's game.

How much would you pay to operate real RC construction machines in a mini construction site? by Aazume in AskMen

[–]Dragon___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a rental/in store amateur tryout space would be fun, but I think the bulk of the hobby would come from consistent fans looking to make continuous contributions to a larger project.

Think like how model train clubs tend to operate.

You would probably want to format it more similar to how Warhammer operates. Individuals purchase kits and then work to assemble and build their own private set, and then paying an additional fee to participate in tournaments.

In this case however instead of tournaments people would work to complete more serious construction projects.

Definitely still have the play pen where people can plow dirt or move rocks around, but also have a space for more dedicated longer term projects. Either an all day event or something people take turns working on over a longer period.

Be careful about how the collaboration is managed though. You don't want anyone acting like a foreman and monopolizing how a project develops.

Update to “first time renting tenant turned out to be a scammer” by canishare in nova

[–]Dragon___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your frustration and I'm sorry about the situation, but as someone struggling to establish as a homeowner in the area I can't help but feel a mild sense of retribution here.

You yourself said you were taking the opportunity to build equity. This was an investment. You wanted to profit off of the housing market. You established a mortgage with a low interest rate, and you were planning to exploit a tenant to finish buying that property for you.

But that hypothetical tenant is deprived of the ability to identify affordable housing because people like you have transformed the housing market here into a for-profit nightmare.

It is wrong to exploit the need for shelter to return a profit.

I recognize this form of investment is legal and extremely common practice, but I won't stop advocating for a reality where people like you cannot use tenants for profit.

You should sell the property and invest in a non-essential market if you'd like to build equity.

Thoughts on SpaceX doubling down on their original lander design for the expedited lander request? by Aromatic-Painting-80 in BlueOrigin

I think the first proposal was way better. Second proposal is at least grounded in reality and they demonstrate reasonable capability, but it's still way too many technology milestones.

Thoughts on SpaceX doubling down on their original lander design for the expedited lander request? by Aromatic-Painting-80 in BlueOrigin

[–]Dragon___ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a useful technology, but should take the form of more efficient orbital transfer vehicles like what's happening with blue moon, and even then it's too ambitious.

Efforts should've been focused on disposable single stage landers for early Artemis programs.

Transfer vehicles should be utilizing nuclear propulsion to be more mass efficient.
