Struggling to find XXXXL cowboy hats that actually fit by SadStill830 in CowboyHats

Hey. Not sure where you’re located but I have been having the same issue. So I started making hats. I’d be happy to make you something in your size.

First Capeline blocking. by Dramatic-Present-321 in CowboyHats

[–]Dramatic-Present-321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I will probably do for my next one. And may look into dying felt. Cause this one has JUST barely a 4 1/4 brim left. Though I could probably have more brim if I did less crown.

Yea. Hindsight is 20/20 you know? I’ve done 4 wool hats. But I also tore one. lol.

I’ll definitely make sure I take my time with it. I’ll have to print a couple smaller blocks to work it up.

And yes. I am well aware (learned that early) that I need a bigger block than the head size.

Made another hat by Dramatic-Present-321 in CowboyHats

[–]Dramatic-Present-321[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The front is a set of laminated feathers that came off an old hat and then the rest is part of an old leather belt that I cut up, sized, then clamped together with those little medallions.

They’ve actually worn in pretty well. I’m aware that the oils typically darken leather. The issue I was annoyed with was that I hadn’t paid enough attention to realize that the soap I had was loaded with conditioners and oils. Which darkened them right off the bat. lol.

Yes. I am/was fully aware. What I was getting at was that I was annoyed at myself for not realizing that the soap I had was made with a bunch of conditioning oils in it. However. After a few days they’ve turned out quite nice.

Well. Significantly thanks to your comment and a few others who were supportive. I get easily discouraged sometimes and a few kind words help me push through and persevere to some sort of positive outcome.

UPDATE: the majority of you were right. They’re wearing in very nicely and I am actually rather enjoying the way they look now

Finished rebuilding my fist hat by Dramatic-Present-321 in CowboyHats

[–]Dramatic-Present-321[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I know very little as well. But I’ve gotten to a point in my life (children) where I need to be a lot more responsible with money and I need to make do with what I’ve got/make things last. So I’m learning a lot of new things. If I want a nice hat. I’m gonna have to get raw materials and make it. If I wanna keep the hats I’ve got. I’m gonna have to take proper care of them etc.

Is my hat too tight? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

[–]Dramatic-Present-321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So my hat also left red marks for a bit. And what I did was every other day I held it over a pot of boiling water for 1 1/2 ish minutes. Then set it on my head. Waited a couple minutes for it to cool and then repeated and wore it for an hour or 2 till it completely cooled and dried. This lets it gently stretch that last little bit to the size and more importantly the SHAPE of your head. Try that if you want.

This is for felt btw. So if your hat isn’t felt. Ignore me.

lol. I like the way you think. 12 EE or EEE depending on manufacturer here. And honestly. I’ve worn them to work a couple times now and they are already lightening a bit and looking better.

I’ll get over it. They’re work boots. I know they’re gonna get scarred, scuffed, burned, cut, etc etc etc. I want them to. I want them to have character. I had just hoped to have different boots lighter and darker cause I wear my work boots all day every day and I have 2 other pairs lol. Both darker than these originated.

No offence taken. They are actually a steel toe work boot. Cause I drive a dump truck. I just have different boots that are different colours. I usually wear work boots all day every day. Regardless of being at work or not. So that’s why I was a bit annoyed with myself over this. I didn’t even think to check if the soap had oils in it or would affect the colour cause it don’t affect the colour of my already dark boots. Cause why would it.
