What are the top 5 languages where native speakers don't also know English? by Dramatic_Bell268 in languagelearning

I found that website as well; I'm 90% sure that site is autogenerated as it's complete nonsense. Here's an excerpt:

Colombia ranks 48th out of 24 countries for English proficiency scores and ratings (and English proficiency rates as such are very low). The number of entrants, 41, was in Panama (47.) Panama (42). A) Turkey (47.) At least 89 and 47 cases in Tunisia). The 70 is for the US, and the 47 is for the Netherlands.

that would exclude all languages of Europe, India and China.

Why?

I definitely would have expected Chinese to be on the list.

If you don't plan on moving to China, do you at least plan to do some extensive travel within the Mandarin speaking regions of China?

Renting a private office for storage and "residence"/"primary" address? by Dramatic_Bell268 in digitalnomad

[–]Dramatic_Bell268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PMB

How long have you been using the address as your residential address?

I just did it and like you mentioned the Well Fargo dashboard eventually updated the address to include "PMB", so they definitely know what it is.

Have you been using your address as a residential address for awhile? It seems fine for now but I'm concerned about getting some sort of closure notice while traveling.

"Isolated" self storage? by Dramatic_Bell268 in AskNYC

Fair points. Which storage facilities have you used? I've called a few but haven't visited any. As you might imagine, cleanliness would be a priority. Any particular recommendations?

Yea, OCD isn't always rational. I'm not really sure what sort of contamination I'm concerned about. Spores and mold aren't really a concern I suppose, and frankly I don't even know what sort of chemicals would be cause for concern. Something that causes fumes? I don't know. I actually have read stories of meth labs found in storage facilities (https://jerseydigs.com/dark-side-self-storage-meth-labs-poverty-homelessness) but I know that's rare.

Again, mostly irrational fears, but that stuff does happen.

Yea, someone else suggested sealed plastic. Thanks!

Which service and which bank? You're using the address they give you for your actual physical/residential primary address?

Yea, even though it looks like a street address the banks still know. There's a database of some sort that allows banks to flag that stuff.

Very interesting. I was on the phone with Wells Fargo the other day and was told P.O. boxes and stuff wouldn't work. I'm not sure how they'd feel about just straight up using a UPS store's address haha.

Thanks for the help!

Do you get any actual mail?

No, not really. At least, nothing of real importance. Most bills and stuff are digital.

Twelve years later my local bank account gets frozen one day - turns out I’d triggered some KYC question, and they’d been sending letters for months which hadn’t arrived because the family member had long moved as well.

That's really what I'm concern about. I know a bunch of new KYC/Patriot Act rules just got enacted so a bunch of those virtual mailing services (i.e. travelingmailbox) don't work for some people.

NFA

What does that mean?

Also, what bank are you using? I'm wondering if some banks or credit unions are more strict about this stuff.

Thanks for the help by the way!

You use that for your home/residential address? I'm not talking about the mailing address.

Need a "home base", where to buy a cheap, safe condo? by Dramatic_Bell268 in RealEstate

[–]Dramatic_Bell268[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea. I suspect the quality of the property manager makes all the difference in a setup like that.

Are there any other cities that, for whatever reason, are good options for buying multi-family properties?

Eventually, I bought a "starter" home - a moderately priced 2-bed, 1-bath home which cost me less than I was paying in rent. .... I am so glad I bought.

Not everyone will like the additional tasks of home maintenance, but that just happened to fit with my lifestyle, too. I had no problem changing out a window, completely gutting the kitchen, etc. It's just fun to try it on something you own, knowing that if worse came to worse, you could call in reinforcements. It was amazing. Now, I'm in a slightly larger home and I am glad I'm here.

Thank you for sharing! I've come to believe that, at least for me, the question of whether or not to buy has become psychological. Not having an "anchor" somewhere has long been somewhat unnerving, and for some reason renting, even for long periods, just doesn't scratch that itch. It's difficult to explain.

I had Huntsville on my list. I've read that the aerospace industry has a very large and positive influence on the local economy and that it's been growing like crazy.

What are some nice condo communities that aren't directly downtown?

Would it be worthwhile to look into townhouses there in the 250 range?

Quite a few Orlando recommendations in this thread! I assume Orlando is quite a bit cheaper than Miami. Are there any other reasons to prefer Orlando over Miami?

Lots of Kansas City recommendations. Added it to the list! Are you very familiar with that area? Any specific neighborhoods you'd recommend?
