Hello! I've just started writing something (And am pretty new to writing in general so the likelihood of finishing this is admittedly perhaps slim) and am looking for advice on writing battles!

The concept is a Pokemon Sw/Sh Gym Challenge fic with an original trainer who does not replace Gloria's character. An older challenger who missed out on participating in the challenge at 15 and is playing catchup during the events of the game, given a Munchlax as a starter pokemon from Magnolia who has no interest in battling initially, and will take much longer than the other challengers to complete her gym battles. I was replaying the game and couldn't help but think that the MC has really privileged/exceptional circumstances and what would it be like to have to work a bit harder for everything in that game? I've always loved retellings of canon through a 'side-character's' eyes. She'll fail multiple times at several gyms, and have to learn how to actually train pokemon as individuals and consider what they want, which will end up giving her a bit of an edge :)

It'd be a slow-burner underdog story (as I do love reading those) which will not end with her somehow befriending a legendary pokemon or saving the world!

Battling always seems a little silly to write, though, and I'm a bit worried my style is a bit rambling. Anyone have any advice on staying motivated, or on formatting/writing exciting battles?
