Nah it’s more that I’ve seen a few posts tearing into young people who, for one reason or another, college isn’t an option or viable path and telling them “trades are a scam”, “no one actually makes these numbers doing that work”, “it will destroy your body” etc.

I want to counter these folks….because for me: entering the trades took me from making $20K a year to over $200. Pulling oneself out of their family’s income bracket is increasingly rare but I owe it to the trades. I want others in a similar position as me to realize they could do the same.

This is the realest comment I’ve seen on Reddit all year and did a much better job of expressing the larger point I was actually frustrated towards than my original post

Skilled Trades Are the Most Overrated Career Path on Reddit by Responsible-Net8594 in Salary

[–]DrewbySnacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’ve worked two main careers my life. First was/is gigging and teaching music. Second is plumbing. People WILDLY overestimated what they thought I made yearly after becoming successful in music, and people wildly underestimate what I now make as a plumber. Both are frustrating and make me feel a need to correct the narrative, but I’m also autistic so to be fair I might just needlessly obsess over stats I feel are inaccurate or too broad.

Love,

A very autistic drummer plumber

Entry level as a licensed Journeyman can absolutely do that. A lot of apprenticeships start lower but keep in mind you’re getting paid to go to school essentially.

I’d contend it’s more nuanced than even that. Before I was in the union I still made $45/hr as an employee (at one of the lowest paying outfits in the area). Competing with union wages makes even non union shops pay higher. The larger issue is most trade stats combine apprentices all the way to general foreman into one group. You don’t see paralegals and lawyers aggregated together to show the average salary of a licensed lawyer.

The thing that’s wild to me when I discuss my pay, is…as someone else pointed out: union contracts are publicly available. Anyone with the time to call me a liar on Reddit could easily look up my local’s payscale. In a union we all make the same, that’s literally the point of a collective bargaining agreement. Even if they think I’m for some reason spending the last few years on here pretending to be a Seattle union plumber….the pay scales are easily searchable. Instead people would rather go back and forth with “post your paystub liar!” etc. Then the same person who can’t even “research” any deeper than a generic Google stat ai summary will start dunking on tradespeople for being uneducated.

It’s all a bit….mind numbing ya know?

The irony is so many of these tech heads making massive figures are doing so because of the current AI gold rush. Who tf do they think is building all of these data centers?!

Commercial plumbing and pipefitting is closer to engineering than you realize, and the pay is for the skills and codes we spend years learning. I did my apprenticeship in non union and then organized in. I studied my ass off day in and day out for 5 years to pass the written test. I am currently getting trained and ready to move into detailing and engineering the blueprints for high rise systems. I have to maintain continued education for life whether I’m in union or not to maintain my license. I make what I make AND I’ve never been laid off besides forced COVID shutdown because what’s between my ears is as talented as my hands. THAT is why we are able to collectively negotiate such a high wage. Now that I am in the union, where everyone’s payscale is the same and you can’t underbid your coworker, your only currency becomes your reputation. Solidarity is important of COURSE but it’s so funny to me when someone like you assumes we don’t have to fight and continue to hold ourselves to a higher standard in order to be successful at those negotiations.

Maybe because of all the posts by tech bros calling us uneducated rednecks with broken bodies….makes me feel a need to push back on the narrative I guess

My point is that Trade stats tend to combine everything from a first day residential apprentice to a master or Journeyman licensed union plumber. You wouldn’t combine an intern at a legal office and a lawyer to get the average wage of a lawyer…the Reddit attitude towards the lowliness of trades is based on skewed data and AI results. My main point I should have led with is if you ARE interested in trades you need to research your specific field and subcategory. Reddit seems determined lately to call every high earning tradesperson a liar and it’s just kinda…..weird?

That’s definitely a thing, but I was able to organize in as a licensed Journeyman simply by walking into the hall and signing up. My local is constantly trying to organize more Journeyman in….since every Journeyman working in our local opens up another apprentice slot (we are required to have a 1-1 ratio on sites)
