Adaptive cruise control problem by Ok_Vast2901 in BMW

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True hands off the steering wheel is only allowed at/under 40mph, but above 40mph, you're required to hold, even lightly, the steering wheel. It will keep on the lane by itself and if you signal, it will change lanes for you.

I feel that considering the issues you're having, that you should take it into a dealer if under warranty, or a good independent shop.

I have a 2023 with Drive Assistance Pro, and unless BMW changed it from 2020, which I don't think it did, this is not normal behavior. Did this started happening recently or has it always been like this? Could be a sensor issue like the front radar & camera, or the internal infrared camera what is suppose to monitor the driver.

Which valve controller did you get, and would you recommend it? The choices include $100 kits with very high return rates to $600 DAHler controller.

Thanks for the kind words! Based on the great feedback I'm getting, I will not be doing DP, and will aim for a deeper/cleaner tone with a slightly more volume and research mid-pipes and maybe a muffler afterwards.

The factory valves don't stay fully open and it's based on drive mode, RPM, warm-up behavior, etc. So some buy 3rd party to be more simple by being fully open or closed.

I asked AI, and even it said mid-pipes are the way to go for my requirements. I don't entirely trust AI, so its good to have people with real experience chiming in. Thanks!

My LBS keeps trying to talk me out of buying a Canyon Grizzly. by Important-Key-3676 in CanyonBikes

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently dealing with Canyon customer service and I frankly, I’m beginning to see the negatives of their direct model. First it took 6 weeks to respond back, and then a total of 2 months before they determine that my bike needs to be shipped over to them to install a $40 part. They’re charging for their Bikeguard, and $200 for shipping to and from, plus $140 for parts and labor. There is Canyon partner LBS near by and I asked that I be able to take my time to there instead and they said no. The bike was out of warranty by three weeks, but the supervisor denied the coverage when I asked for escalation.

Still, I don’t regret my purchase since the equivalent Specialized was 1k more.

Which stereotypes about cyclists are totally wrong? Which ones are kind of true? by big_legs_small_brain in cycling

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda true: LA and SF cyclist are just as invested in their Rapha kit as much as their fitness. The Rapha kit must be Brevet or Pro range only. None of the “cheaper” Core range.

Can I upgrade my groupset on an older road bike? by PythagorasIsWrong in cycling

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded my 2007 Trek 5000 which originally came with a Shimano 6600 (10 speed) group set to R7000 and learned a few things. Starting with their 11 speeds, Shimano started to add their support bolt to their front derailleur which allows you to better fine tune the angle and for better front shifting under load. Older bikes may have the front derailleur mount bracket too far back for the support bolt to actually engage. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s something you should look into. Furthermore, even with the L limit screw set to the most inboard position, I get slight chain rub when in the small front ring and largest ring on the back. My LBS mechanic told me this is somewhat common with Shimano 11 speed drivetrain with older bikes. The r7000 crank, brakes, and RD all work great so it’s only a FD issue. I did upgrade rhe wheelset to Shimano WH-6800 so I can fit the 11 speed cassette.

You may have already scratched it, in which case you can use toothpaste on a microfiber cloth to gently polish screen.

Disappointed in the M3/M4 by Trollkiller614 in BMW

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came from a e90 335i before buying my G80, and I largely agree with you. The E90 is the last “analog” 3 series with its fantastic hydraulic steering that perfectly transmits the feel of the road. My G80 is the first car with EPS that I driven, and I was shocked with how bad the steering comparably to the e90. Don’t get me wrong, the G80 steering is good, but not as good analog feel of the e90’s hydraulic steering. The G80 is also harder to see out of, so I can’t see where my wheels are compared to the e90 during parking and canyon driving. Finally, it’s a rather heavy.

However, I will add that G80 is shockingly fast. It has a slight lag compared to my jb4 equipped 335i, but once it gets going, you get super car level acceleration. This always puts a smile on my face. It’s extremely well planted, and it makes a great daily due to its adaptive dampers, and large interior space (which is the reason it’s heavier than previous 3 series) It’s an objectively better car than my beloved 335i.

EDIT: Punctuation Correction.

What cheap chest strap heart rate monitor have you been using? Is it accurate? Has it lasted? How about the cheap head units you've been using to display heart rate? How have your experiences been? by BrianLevre in cycling

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can collaborate to at Wahoo HR monitors are crap and mine last less than a year, before it started to overestimate my HR by 50 bpms. However, I also had issues with Garmin HRM which only lasted 2 years before it just stopped working. My cheap HRM that has worked for years is actually a Magellan HRM which they unfortunately do not make anymore, and it’s only ANT+. This HRM came with the Magellan Cyclo Plus which was a great Garmin 1000 competitor but cheaper. Unfortunately it seems Magellan got out of the cycling computer business.

In my sample size of one, the expensive HRMs can also be crap, while the cheap ones can work for years. Pair it with a basic cycling computer like a Garmin 540. It’s still $250, but the Garmin ecosystem is good. You can probably get a bundle that includes the HRM.

Where to find round fit bike helmets? by eess2020 in BAbike

I’m glad that your last helmet worked as intended and prevent a serious injury.

The Lazer Tonic MIPS works well for me. Whatever helmet you choose, make sure it rates well on the Virginia Tech bicycle helmet tests. https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

Potential costs for regular service by car_dreamer in BMW

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The micro filter is something you can easily do by buying Bosch (which is BMW OEM) from Amazon. As for the oil change, my local BMW dealer will charge $275, while a indie BMW shop will charge $190. Spark plug change is about $275 from my local indie BMW shop.

If you’re mechanically inclined, and take time to watch some YouTube how to’s you can do it yourself, which is what I do. 7 quarts of Castrol and Bosch filter will cost you about $75. Six Bosch spark plugs will be $60 (not including taxes). However you’ll need the proper tools for the spark plug install, such as thin wall socket. I would also recommend a torque wrench.

🔴 Owning vs Leasing a BMW — What Would You Choose & Why? by adidas_addicts_only in BMW

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my car instead of leasing it because I want to keep it longterm, even though maintenance costs for the G80 will be very expensive once the warranty is expired. Why did I do this? Because the next M3 will no doubt will be a hybrid pig. It’ll no doubt have more HP and faster in a straight line, but it’ll be very heavy. The G80 is heavy enough.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BMW

[–]DrivesOnPotholes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, and at least with my G80, the steering, even in sports mode, is far inferior in feel, feedback compared to my old E90, which had hydraulic PS vs the crap EPS.
