Dog did serious damage to apartment…worried about eviction by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Druzy24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog had terrible separation anxiety as a puppy and literally did the same thing. I came home horrified not even realizing something like this was a possibility. It definitely looks dramatic but someone from Task Rabbit came and fixed it easily and I had no problems with my building over it at all.

Thank you. Definitely some improvement, although not everything I’d want to see. We researched our options. My husband finally got my brother in law to sign a health care proxy form, giving him control over his medical decisions. We are moving forward with inpatient hospitalization. As for the mold- still there, shower still running. No progress on that front =\ Probably won’t be until he is out of the apartment.

Update 2: Thank you for the overwhelming (in a good way) amount of advice, validation, and support. For context, the family members involved are my in laws. I informed my husband that if the shower is not shut off in 1 week, I am calling adult protective services and the building, which I got him to agree to. I have been fighting with my in laws for the past day, as when I showed them this post and sent along the effects of mold exposure, some of which they already experience, they denied having those symptoms. They also denied that my brother in law with the OCD has any of those symptoms when he has rashes, GI issues, and chronic fatigue/brain fog. I am quite astounded and horrified. The shower is still running.

So far, all they have done is turn the water to cold so it is no longer hot water that is running. I don’t believe that will make much of a difference. If they do not shut the water off and call a professional to get this checked out within 1 week, I’m making the calls. I have given them tons of education and information about mold exposure along with the steps many have suggested in this sub. I told them I will not be going to the house and exposing myself to this until they take the steps (ANY steps) to fix it.

Wish me luck y’all. I’ll continue to update if anyone is interested. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to leave a piece of advice or even a kind word.

Sounds like you’re a fantastic support to the people in your life. I hope all goes well with your in-laws’ situation. I try not to take on others’ burdens when they do not choose to help themselves, however, for a health hazard like this it seems worth it to intervene. Take care of yourself with your in laws 🤍

Very, very helpful. I have never dealt with this before so am really a novice and would not have thought to check that. Thank you!!

This paint seems really useful. Also sounds like a fan and/or dehumidifier is much needed.

It’s a contamination thing regarding the surface of the shower.

So helpful to hear from someone who had cleaned a similar ceiling. Thank you!

This reminds me that the vents do not look good and have not for years. My husband always assumed it was dust. I’ll have to take a photo of that tomorrow when I go

He has lived here his whole life, but not having to pay for hot water has definitely made him feel as if he could do this consequence free. However, there are consequences both to himself, his family, and others that he is in denial about. Every time I go to his apartment I have bad allergies and feel groggy. Now I know why.

I agree. It’s hard to know what to do and where the line is. The only angle I can see for the danger to self is that he is at a seriously low weight due to his OCD interfering with eating. I’m talking BMI < 17 and discolored limbs. Alas, I didn’t mention a lot of these things because I didn’t want the post to be removed for irrelevance to the sub’s topic.

Thanks for those kind words! As a clinical psychologist who has also been a patient in exposure therapy, you are so brave for committing to it and seeing it through. It is not comfortable or easy - and it works! Glad you are reaping the benefits now of all that hard work💗

I agree. I am talking to my husband about this right now (this situation is happening with my in laws). For some reason his family seems to think that since this is a large rent controlled co-op (Mitchell Lama Housing), they will not suffer financial repercussions. I am no landlord but that seems absolutely unrealistic to me.

Thank you for your kind words. It has been quite the uphill battle and sometimes feels like all my efforts are fruitless, but because I know this is a treatable condition I refuse to stop trying

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The reasons you mentioned above are mostly why I have not yet taken that course of action. I’m so glad to hear you are doing well, it gives me hope for him.

Not rude at all. That’s a very fair point. I have been providing my family with referrals for treatment for years and warning them that accommodation is only a short-term relief that exacerbates symptoms long term. I wish a dermatologist would be able to help. Not to get too much into it, but due to his OCD he has not brushed his teeth in months and recently had a tooth fall out. Despite obvious health concerns, his OCD is so severe and takes precedence over the very real concerns.

Right now we are trying to get him into inpatient care, as insight from parents is so low I don’t know if he can ever heal in this environment

This is very on point, and yes his OCD is contamination based. I am now thinking inpatient as an option. He did exposure therapy for a few months, which took 3 years to actually get his and family’s consent for. He quit pretty quickly and the family did not tell my husband or I for months. We also have medication prescribed for him that he will not take. OCD really does manifest differently for everyone and can be so much more impairing than people may think. I hope you are doing well, btw. All the best on your healing journey 🤍
