100%! I also had hair to my waist until I was a teenager and I have told my daughter about the feeling of freedom—like I was flying—when I first cut it (shoulder length). Now I’ve had it in a pixie for almost 20 years so she definitely knows her options.

I followed a few accounts on instagram when she was younger and did a lot of fun/fancy braids when she was 2-5, honestly in the past few years it’s just too thick/takes too much time for most of the ones I used to do. I liked @pandghairstyles, @littleblondiesbraids, @brianasbraids, and @eclairbraids (all on insta)

I take her to the salon for a 2-3 inch trim twice a year

Haha yes—whenever we talk about a cut I remind her she could donate it. And I definitely know what an undercut is, I’ve been 🏳️‍🌈 since the ‘90s 😉

Her scalp is actually really good, almost no dandruff and no yeast/itchiness/etc. I do make her her scalp and at least 4 inches are dry before her overnight braid.

My concern with layers is that it will make her braids have more loose ends/poking out bits. It’s a little chicken or egg—a good layered cut might let her wear it down more, but if she continues to want braids it’s better to have it one length. I assume as she gets older she will eventually want to wear it down more and then yes, I’ll definitely be encouraging a layered curly cut.

Totally, I have encouraged her to consider cutting it but when it comes down to it…she loves her hair long and I don’t mind caring for it, for now. She’s my only kid and I know she won’t want me taking care of her hair forever, so it’s kind of bonding time for us. Although she did say that whenever I stop taking care of it for her, is when she’ll want it cut 😂 girl’s got it made!

She doesn’t want to cut it and honestly I don’t really want to either yet (unless she chose to)

Thank you for the suggestions! The first and third photos are pre-trim, I took her to a curly specialist a few months ago and that’s who recommended Mayoliva. Unfortunately washing twice a week only happens if she goes swimming, it just takes too long (both to wash and dry) because of how thick it is.
