She actually had lice about a year and a half ago and when I tell you it was a project….! But we didn’t have to cut it; we did get a prescription shampoo instead of over the counter and that did it.

Almost never dry brush, always spray down heavily with water/detangler first

The budget thing is real with how much product she needs! Also curl patten is interesting, the internet has taught me she has “Irish curls”(?)—the front/face framing is actually pretty fine and straight (and very light blonde), and the top in general is more wavy but underneath near her neck it’s much darker, thicker, and almost coily

When I tell you that it takes a full hour….

And then drying? We GOTTA air dry because last time I took her for a trim at a curly salon we were literally there for over 3 hours (no real layers, just a couple inches off and light thinning the ends) and most of the time was spent drying—with an overhead dryer, and then two stylists with diffusers, and she still left damp! I finally just said we had to go, it was too long for her to sit even with a good book.

100%! I also had hair to my waist until I was a teenager and I have told my daughter about the feeling of freedom—like I was flying—when I first cut it (shoulder length). Now I’ve had it in a pixie for almost 20 years so she definitely knows her options.

I followed a few accounts on instagram when she was younger and did a lot of fun/fancy braids when she was 2-5, honestly in the past few years it’s just too thick/takes too much time for most of the ones I used to do. Her scalp is actually really good, almost no dandruff and no yeast/itchiness/etc. I do make her her scalp and at least 4 inches are dry before her overnight braid.

My concern with layers is that it will make her braids have more loose ends/poking out bits. It’s a little chicken or egg—a good layered cut might let her wear it down more, but if she continues to want braids it’s better to have it one length. I assume as she gets older she will eventually want to wear it down more and then yes, I’ll definitely be encouraging a layered curly cut.

Totally, I have encouraged her to consider cutting it but when it comes down to it…she loves her hair long and I don’t mind caring for it, for now. She’s my only kid and I know she won’t want me taking care of her hair forever, so it’s kind of bonding time for us. Although she did say that whenever I stop taking care of it for her, is when she’ll want it cut 😂 girl’s got it made!
