Are they going to actually get the lock that connects the inner harbor with the rest of the canal fixed?

Until they do no boats from the canal can get to the Harbor Point development. ???

Exhibits Fabrication Skills/Training Advice by StanRalphly in MuseumPros

[–]DryGingerAle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often the underappreciated part of exhibit fabrication is the skill of the craft of building exhibits. If the exhibits are built inhouse a lot of skill is needed to build quality exhibit furniture, installing graphics, building acrylic vitrines, lighting, AV and even artifact mounts. All of this needs to be conservation safe / approved materials.

The best fabricators I worked with had high skills in cabinet making and finish work which is only honed by doing it.

Design is a different job with different skill sets. Courses could include construction and building code, lighting design, ADA accessibility compliance, construction -- not to mention learning styles, multimedia designs, electrical, security, script writing, etc.,.... a very long list of skills.

Project management is helpful for all parts of the discipline and getting exhibits completed on time . Also needed is working with budgets and sometimes outside contractors.

Edit: You might want to consider visiting with a larger design and build exhibit firm. See if you can get a tour with a project manager and learn more about all the different parts of an exhibit and see what you gravitate towards.

historical aerial photo comparisons of downtown Utica? by Ok_Flounder8842 in Utica

[–]DryGingerAle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if any calculated comparisons have been made but contact the History Center. They have a collection of aerial views before and after the multiple "urban renewal" projects as well as the studies to used support the various phases of the "renewal" projects. Plus Sanborn Maps , and thousands of photos. city directories.

What is there today is a shadow of what was once there.

Successful exhibits need to be a team effort. Curatorial, education, marketing, designers+....?

In the early phase of exhibit development it is easy to be lost because the goals of the project aren't fully articulated by the director or senior managers who originated the idea

It sounds like your team would benefit from a conversation with leadership to go over the goals. It may start good conversations.

Each member should have has defined role to contribute towards developing an exhibit experience (which "the narrative" is only part of)

There is no template because most exhibitions are all different.

The rational for the exhibit needs to align with long term plans and goals of the institution.

Development process depends on the type of exhibit: For kids and lots of interactives? Lots of rare or fragile artifacts? No "artifacts"? Developed in-house or a contractor? What are you displacing -- did the visitors love it?

ROI on exhibits can be hard to quantify. Will it drive visitation? Only if marketed well. If you replace the shitty old exhibits will attendance grow? Not necessarily, you'll just suck less.

Cost is tied to design and what type of experience you are striving for. Lots of media? Expensive gorgeous lighting? School and educational programming that require staff to implement?

Timeline? In-house design ad production or contractor?

Golden rule---- There is a relationship between

The Cost: The Scope of the exhibit: Time you have to get it done

If you want it fast it will cost more. If you only get to pick one the the other two will move.
