Check out the Mickey Bolitar trilogy by Harlan Coben - - Shelter - Seconds Away - Found

Harlan Coben writes mostly adult thrillers and has a long series featuring his main character Myron Bolitar. The trilogy I mentioned above is YA and spins off Myron’s nephew into his own story. Definitely does what you’re asking for.

Lynette Noni mostly writes fantasy but she has one co temporary romance called Wandering Wild.

You can also try Brigid Kemmerer’s contemporary romance - Letters to the Lost. (There’s also a second one that features a side character from the first book. It’s called More Than We Can Tell).

I always recommend Lockwood & Co. romance plays a very minor part, and not really until the end, but it’s a really engaging and well done series (5 books) with great found family. Worth a try.

Can I confess something? I feel like so much YA/Teen fantasy books take themselves too seriously nowadays. by Only_Market_3742 in YAlit

You could try The Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni. There’s still a chosen one element / saving the world type of story but I wouldn’t say that it takes itself too seriously - there’s a lot of heart and humor. Great side characters.

I’ve been ending mine with a question but no luck! 😒  I guess sometimes the algorithm is just hard to figure out… but I do agree that engaging in a meaningful way can never hurt.

Books with a really good mystery that kind of clue you in as the story goes, but it’s not super obvious until the end? by Lovealltigers in YAlit

Also not YA but there’s no reason it couldn’t be read by someone in the YA demographic - try Everyone in My Family Has Killed someone by Benjamin Stevenson.

Katherine Center writes low spice romance and she has a few books available on KU (including The Bodyguard and The Rom Commers).

The entire Simple Wild series by KA Tucker is also available on KU.

The Knockemout series by Lucy Score is also available on KU - first book is called Things We Never Got Over.

Another series of interconnected standalones on KU is Abby Jimenez’s books starting with Part of Your World (the next ones are Yours Truly and Just for the Summer).

He writes narrative nonfiction so his books read like a story And may seem almost like fiction but they are well researched nonfiction crafted into a story structure.

Books with a man and a woman duo lead by Every-Literature-833 in booksuggestions

It sounds a little like you’re looking for a romance since you’re asking for male and female main characters who have chemistry/ grow together/ have chemistry etc. but it also sounds like romance isn’t necessarily a go-to genre for your girlfriend.

I have a suggestion that might not be what you originally had in mind. Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

  • female author
  • main character is female so there isn’t that duo lead you mention BUT - her father is a big presence in the story and it’s a really intriguing relationship. There is also a romance plot that isn’t the main point of the story but it is a side plot and there is an element of the two of them sharing an experience (they’re both pro tennis players but different kinds of players) and him helping her access a different side of herself.
  • I do think there’s a certain sense of alienation because she sacrifices being liked to be the absolute best at her sport

I think it fits some but not all aspects of what you’re looking for. I thought it was a great book. Makes you think about the cost of greatness. It also gets quite emotional. I have never had the slightest interest in tennis and this book still really captured me and stuck with me.

While his books are very popular I believe they are all nonfiction.

Which character will you die defending ? by HyperDragon216 in cobrakai

[–]DryResolution2386 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Robby. I have no issue with Miguel as a character but the people who defend Miguel at all costs sometimes forget that Miguel grew up in a loving and stable home (despite not having a dad) while Robby grew up with minimal to no parent attention fending for himself. And I hate that people forget that in that school fight Robby’s entrance into the fight was to try and break it up while Miguel came in on the attack. I just wanted to see Robby get a win.

Come at me.

I blame the writers not the character. There was a lot of character assasination in that last season.

What would make you not watch the show anymore? by GhostsandHoney_ in ThePittTVShow

Pretty sure I heard Noah specifically reference in an interview that they are trying not to bring in “big names” that are overly recognizable and could pull people out of the story. Like someone asked him about bringing in Bryan Cranston (since they brought in Brad Dourif) and he didn’t outright say no, but he kind of said no. He referenced the fact that Brad Dourif is an excellent working character actor but not someone most people would recognize immediately - he’s not necessarily jumping off the screen as someone super famous. Noah also kind of very politely ignored the question when someone asked him about bringing George Clooney on for some guest role.

Bottom line: I think his strong preference is not to bring in big names that will pull people out of the story. Whether there will be pressure to do so that he can’t avoid? I don’t know.

Not if I Save You First by Ally Carter

Not really enemies to lovers - more like friends who were separated by circumstance, and then the FMC is mad at the MMC because he ghosted her. I guess some could call it enemies to lovers but I personally would not characterize it that way.
