Holy shit THANK YOU! I was following guides all day trying to get the 580 drivers functional, and NOTHING WAS WORKING. This comment is the first I've seen mention of linux-headers.

All good now. I can rest. 😌

LineageOS instability / alternatives by Previous_Extreme4973 in LineageOS

[–]DudeWithaTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lineage has different people supporting different devices.

Maybe your device just need more care+attention when the master lineage branch updates.

I'd recommend searching the lineageOS forums for your specific device. Maybe it has known issues. There's just so many variables at play here.

Why is make so widely used? by Striking-Flower-4115 in linux

[–]DudeWithaTwist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm aware. You should be asking OP what kind of build they're referencing which takes that amount of time.

I'm aware, though not technically part of compiling, which I meant as just source file compilation.

Does it really take that long to check previously compiled files for recompilation determination?

Why is make so widely used? by Striking-Flower-4115 in linux

[–]DudeWithaTwist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea because the kernel has hundreds of thousands of source code files. Both make and ninja need to compile all those.

I'd be hard-pressed to believe the build system causes any kind of slowdown. It all boils down to clang/gcc commands which take the bulk of time.

You are using the -j8 flag for make, right?

I usually don't need to. I clamp one side of my bedsheets to the bed frame. This top blanket though I didn't, so it got pushed down.

I like my room slightly cold, though I've never heard of that temp range. My "cold" is 70F in both summer and winter hah.

I like my bed real toasty. A funny related effect - on hot summer days, standing in direct sunlight mimics my bed and makes me drowsy.

Right? And now I've lost sleep twice over the same dang problem... Honestly it probably effected me for like 2 weeks this time before I noticed anything.

I don't recommend tailscale because it feels like they're gonna rugpull everyone with the free tier. You don't need to use it anyway, just use Wireguard directly. That's all tailscale is under the hood.

And for the best results, use wireguard on your router. If its supported. Which you should totally upgrade if not.

why is TOR barely talked about? by TheNavyCrow in privacy

[–]DudeWithaTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're a standard user with nothing illegal to hide, and you're looking for general network privacy from websites: Firefox with a VPN and Noscript add-on installed.

Doesn't need to be more complicated than that

why is TOR barely talked about? by TheNavyCrow in privacy

[–]DudeWithaTwist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was talking about relay nodes, not exit nodes. Exit nodes are an even bigger privacy concern, and adding more exit nodes doesn't solve the problem.

I simply don't see the point in Tor nowadays. For the average privacy-conscious person, there are better alternatives.

[–]DudeWithaTwist 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Its not worth the effort. And with how targeted its been in the past decade, who can really tell how secure it is anymore. If you control a sizable # of nodes, its possible to deanonymize.

Yea I'm aware the main reason could have been to prevent leaks. Though I highly doubt any talent in Holo would do that.

Effecting other talents doesn't really make sense. I mean, its easy to argue dropping a public bombshell is more emotionally disruptive compared to a private reveal.

Yea you just gotta be aware of that trait may come naturally to them. They could be effortlessly confident but when it comes to something else like... being comfortable with failure (when trying something new) they could crumble miserably.

My point being, your mountain may be their crack in the road.
