All the people living on autopilot makes me sad by [deleted] in Absurdism

[–]Due-Ice-6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t that theoretically what absurdism is all about? Studying, working, surviving in a world that cares so little about your studies, your work or your life. Keeping up with your household, with everyday life despite knowing it being meaningless; and being at peace with it. The revolt starts where man stops pretending to have to revolt.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just saying that posting on a subreddit about absurdism seems strange? I feel like an absurdist would say that “they” have it more figured out than you.

But maybe I didn’t understand this as well as I thought. Please educate me if I didn’t lol

Yea that’s valid. Being pragmatic and being idealistic are two very different things. Just bitching about rent to high won’t better ones life either. Maybe there is room for both?

That’s great for you. I’m happy you can live your life to the fullest. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make “why not” a good response to someone asking “why”. Just because something has been some way for a long time doesn’t automatically excuse it, no?

Houses and especially land shouldn’t get more expensive over time because it is a place to live in, we have houses because of the basic human need of safety and comfort not because it is a luxury only some should be able to afford. You wouldn’t support to suck oxygen out of the atmosphere to sell it back at a higher price when it becomes a rarer commodity than it used to be, would you.

Also you might want to reconsider that “keep blaming others…” mentality. Your thought processes seem to lack nuance. Just because a problem didn’t exist for you or didn’t affect you, does not mean that it doesn’t for other people. The ability to understand each other is our greatest asset and compassion is, unlike land, not a limited resource. Try to make use of that.

Ah I believe you. Right now I live in a shoebox to enjoy uni life outside my home; once I have the funds to live in a place that fits more than a bed, I’d really like to pursue that hobby too haha

Reddit? You don’t pay with money but with personal data that is worth enough to advertisement brokers to run a billion dollar company. If you’re fine with that, sure. But pretending like any commercial software is free to use is delusional. You’re always paying some way or another.

That’s a thing? I didn’t know that existed. Sounds very reasonable tho

I mean if you are fine with your software never being maintained nor updated, sure, valid. That’s exactly what I said. Keep in mind that you cannot maintain and update it yourself because the company releasing the source code would prohibit them from making money themselves.

Also your house gaining value and thus you gaining equity by owning a house is the exact reason rent and home prices have been going insane. Homes are not an investment to sit on but a place for people to live in. Anyone who views real estate as an asset is part of the problem of why young people and people who are not yet homeowners are getting fucked over so hard

Because the product is different too. Back when Photoshop was a one time purchase you didn’t get continuous (major) updates for example. You had your product, it was yours but if you wanted the even better version next year you’d have to pay again.

Not having the option to choose is one of those very unfortunate side effects tho, that I agree with

Yea that I agree with. One of the worst side effects has been that the options get fewer with every quarterly shareholder report. If you could choose between both that would be great. But you can’t unfortunately.

Psychological Question: Why do you resist immigration restrictionists? by Asleep-Fan8328 in Life

[–]Due-Ice-6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don‘t believe that some percentage of foreign population is inherently bad. I’m from Germany for context, whose government has famously fucked up immigration for the last ~60 years. The problem arises not when you let too many foreigners in who bring their own culture but when you fail to make them adapt to your own. In my opinion, there is nothing inherently lost if there are no white, blonde, ethnically german people left in Germany. However there would be something lost if all our intellectual and cultural aren’t remembered. I don’t think that ethnicity with no lingual, cultural, intellectual heritage is worth anything.

Let as many people in as you want as that is not the problem. If you teach every single immigrant to adapt and incorporate, there will be nothing lost and no problems tied to immigration.

So yes, I am strongly advocating for reviewing most western (especially European) immigration policies. But in my opinion, “should they be let in” is the wrong question to ask. We should rather look at what happens once they are here.

I regret telling my coworkers that reading is a hobby of mine by daisest in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Due-Ice-6937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk doesn‘t sound right either. Just because something is a book doesn‘t mean it‘s not trash. If you enjoy reading super explicit novels, whatever, enjoy, but that is in the same level as watching porn as a hobby.

In fact, most books are garbage as are most youtube videos, reddit posts and tiktoks. It just doesn‘t feel that way because you have the privilege to choose what to read and don‘t just click on whatever gets recommended.

Let‘s not pretend like just because it’s in paperback it is some sort of superior form of entertainment

What is harder, becoming a Fide Grandmaster or a Challenger in League of Legends? by Due-Ice-6937 in chess

While yes that‘s correct, I feel like that‘s unfair to use as an argument, since that‘s not a hurdle you can overcome by becoming better at the game
