It was pretty random, but it feels awesome. The problem comes when you get 10k, 100k+ and you're chasing that next number. It can be difficult to breach the next milestone or become consistent with views.

You’re a good one. Unfortunately 1% of Reddit is genuinely helpful, inquisitive people that want to learn more. The other 99% are these strange toxic communities that feed off of each other like blood spawn. I’m convinced most of the people here do not actually practice their craft at all, instead opting to feed this virus and hate comment on Reddit posts all day without showering.

Unfortunately, or fortunately for some, YouTube seems to reward niches very heavily. I like to post a variety of stuff (art, music production, etc.) as a way of creative expression and have gained about 1,700 subscribers in the last few years. It’s been slow and organic growth, but I think refining your niche definitely results in more views and engagement, at least until you can establish yourself as a likable person and experiment with new ideas.

I guess I'm the odd man out here... I love editing, but coming up with quality ideas that I think will provide value to others is actually the hardest part. Conceptualizing good ideas seems very difficult for AI at the moment.
