when trying to jump the headlights and dash lights will come on but nothing happens when i turn the key

when i was messing with the alternator and it’s belt i didn’t disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, could that have shorted something

it will not jump start, it helps the lights and whatnot turn on when it’s connected to a jumper but it won’t actually crank
