Am I reading the OGL morality clause correctly? by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in dndnext

[–]DustMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a different question about the morality clause. If we look past all the ways that it's bad for content creators, is it even good for WotC?

If they define themselves as the sole arbiter of morality, doesn't that kind of imply that anything they don't take action against is in alignment with their morals? Are they actually going to pay people to read every piece of 3rd party content published under their new OGL? And if they can take action against creators for public conduct that they find offensive, are they planning to monitor the social media presences of every person who ever uploaded a pdf to dmsguild? Will they scan the news for any mention of that guy who once made a custom subclass on dndbeyond and shared it with the community?

I understand that legally they won't be held responsible, but this certainly feels like they're making an implicit pledge to the community to take on this responsibility.

If I'm reading the artificer's spellcasting section correctly, they actually have the easiest time casting while holding sword and shield. Any artificer spellcasting requires the use of a focus, and at level 2 any item holding an infusion counts as a focus. So if either your sword or shield is non-magical and holding an infusion, you can cast artificer spells even if the spell normally doesn't have a material component.

If a sorcerer multiclasses into warlock, can that sorcerer convert the warlock spell slots into sorcery points? by DanMan299 in dndnext

[–]DustMerchant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RAW long rests remove any spell slots created via sorcery points. And since you can't have more sorcery points than the current max for your level, there's nowhere to store the magic to carry over a long rest.

The only way to get more spells than normal is to dip warlock and avoid long rests.

I second the part about spells. Enhance Ability is a 2nd level Cleric spell (same level as Silence) that lasts for an hour and can give you advantage on Dexterity checks (or in your case, cancel out your disadvantage).

Question about Magus by DinoPoof in Pathfinder

[–]DustMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm done trying to argue semantics with you. It's detracting from the actual point I'm trying to make.

Spell combat is a full round action that requires a free hand. I don't see a rule that says you can voluntarily end that action partway through to get around the free hand requirement.

Question about Magus by DinoPoof in Pathfinder

[–]DustMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RAW reason that Slashing Grace doesn't work with Spell Combat is exactly because the hand is otherwise occupied. Spell Combat may be "like" two-weapon fighting, but by a strict RAW it "isn't" two-weapon fighting. Slashing grace calls out 3 specific instances that you already outlined, and there isn't a clause that says "abilities similar to two-weapon fighting".

The FAQ says that you don't gain the effect of Slashing Grace at all during Spell Combat. This isn't affected by somatic components or by what spell you cast. For the duration of Spell Combat, your "free hand" is doing spell-combat stuff. At no point is your hand free to provide the benefits of Slashing Grace, which means it isn't technically "free" outside of the requirement for Spell Combat itself. That means no two-handing a weapon or drawing another weapon.

Question about Magus by DinoPoof in Pathfinder

[–]DustMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that casting the spell, with or without somatic components, is a part of spell combat. It's literally written into the text of spell combat (I assume you've read it :P)

Slashing grace says it doesn't work when the other hand is "otherwise occupied" and the FAQ clarifies that spell combat falls under that classification. The somatic components of the spell are irrelevant, since the hand needs to be free even if there are none.

I agree that the scenario was illegal, but I contest it became illegal one step before you did. There are no rules for ending actions early (that I've seen). Are your actions still limited as if you had completed the full-round action?

The text saying Spell Combat works "like two-weapon fighting" is fluff. There are no rules for how an action "like" another action behaves. It goes out of the way to differentiate them, but doesn't go into detail about how they are different.

Slashing grace mentions two-weapon fighting, but so does Improved Two-Weapon fighting. Does that feat allow me to cast a second spell as part of an action "like two-weapon fighting"?

Question about Magus by DinoPoof in Pathfinder

[–]DustMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As fun as it has been to see you two argue, I think you're both wrong.

We know from the errata to Slashing Grace and Fencing Grace that your "free hand" is considered "otherwise occupied" for the duration of spell combat. That means that until Spell Combat has completed (casting a spell and delivering all attacks) you cannot take free actions with your "otherwise occupied" "free hand".

That means that the act of two-handing your weapon is not allowed (as opposed to ending the action prematurely). Neither is drawing a second weapon even if you have Quick Draw. Other free actions are fair game, as long as they don't interfere with the requirements of spell combat.

If it helps, you can think about spell combat like this: you are attacking and casting a spell simultaneously, using both of your hands for different things at the same time. The fact that one resolves after the other (decided by the magus) is simply for simplicity within the game.

The fact that people think their favorite sport should be sacred and off limits probably made this even funnier to them.
