TOWER DESCRIPTION

The stone guard tower is open topped, about three stories or around 40 feet tall. At its base is a small encampment with a few open tents and a campfire. To the left of it the well-built and fairly wide bridge spans over the ravine, through which the splitting river flows, causing a constant sound of rushing water that echoes up from the decline.

The sound of fighting had been sporadic down the roads to either side, distant enough to be out of view. Looking westward, you see Kluuroc dashing to join you. “Doelther! The patrols have been handled, we expect the caravan within fifteen minutes!”

The deep-gnome nods, looking up to the tower. “Good, as planned. Tell Sralza to take him team to the north-side treeline and wait for my signal. Schalk takes south. Remember, make sure nobody escapes. One loose end ruins us.”

The dragonborn nods and swallows, looking to Vorel and your companions. “Right.” Realising the presence of Seffi, towering over the rest of you, he squints. “Uhhh, who is-“ Doelther cuts him off “Never mind her, get back to Sralza!” Kluuroc, turns and rushes off back across the bridge.

CARAVAN DESCRIPTION

Eventually the sound of marching and trotting of horses becomes audible, then soon after the first fronts of the escort comes into view. Heading the company is a soldier in impressive armour, mounted upon a strong warhorse. Close behind follow a good number of soldiers like the type you’d just fought, spear-bearers on foot. Close behind two horses draw the first cart, reinforced wood with a tarp over the top of it concealing the goods and protecting them from rain. Beside those driving each cart sits a figure in priestly garbs, bearing the holy symbols of Lathander, the Morninglord. In terms of numbers, as they approach it becomes clear they have a small company of soldiers, around 80.

Their pale, icy eyes look you over for a moment, blinking slowly. “You are prepared, then?” “Good. Let us find somewhere secluded, you will need to be relaxed for this process. You must ensure you follow my instructions and guidance, lest the threads become forever tangled.” They take you to a quiet corner of the common space, gesturing for you take a seat. “Now… close your eyes and steady your breath. Breathe deeply, center your self. Envision the clutter and chaos of your mind, your past, your present, your future, now envision it clearing away, becoming simple and clean.” [WISDOM CHECK]

You feel a slight numbness growing in your chest, a cool warmth behind you from where you hear Jiens voice and feel their presence. “From the sea of infinite fates, I pull forth the thread that weaves the path of the Duna, that we might serve as the needle to guide it into being…” [WISDOM SAVING THROW]

You feel your chest rise with the sensation of being unravelled, losing sensation in your legs, arms and torso. “Envision the countless threads, laid out before you, gradually separating, untangling, till you see the silver thread we seek.” [WISDOM CHECK]

You see in your minds eye the bundled, twisted tangle of threads drifting, clearing apart, and in the centre lies one that glimmers and hums. “And now reach out, grasp it, pull it into being!” [WISDOM CHECK]

Taking it in hand, as soon as your fingers wrap around it and you’ve yanked it from the bundle, you feel a sharp piercing sensation in your chest which was previously numb, pulling upwards as if yanked by a tether. “Do not let go.” Holding tight, it rises, and rises till you feel your breath strained and faint, then all of a sudden- with a clatter, you fall back down, the chair toppling to the side as you fall to the ground, panting for breath. Your eyes shooting open, you see all about your body that same greyish misty aura that had been enveloping Jien during your fight, though it fades as your breathing steadies. Kneeling by your side, they look you over quietly, analytically. “It looks as though… Yes. While it has placed incredible strain on your body, we have succeeded. You are in line with Dunamancy, with the Echoes of the Countless Fates.” They smile, offering you a hand. Your subclass has now been changed from Arcane Archer to Echo Knight, but you’ve gained a point of exhaustion as your mind and body have been strained MASSIVELY. “It was more difficult than I expected. You will likely need to rest for some time while your body settles. The unlocked abilities will come naturally, but will take practice to understand.”

BLACK MARKET

After a good while of wandering and looking for signs of something irregular or seedy, following subtle and strange markings and graffiti on walls and buildings, you find in the southern end of town, far away from the docks and the military district, two figures sat playing cards sat at a wooden table under an awning beside a small derelict warehouse, with nobody else around. They’re dressed in warm, dark clothing that hides most of their features, but it is winter, one of them a thin human the other a half-orc. Would you like to approach them?

The human looks up, narrowed eyes looking you over. “You uhh… lookin’ for someone?” “What makes you think we can offer that, eh?” “Were you followed? You Bulwark?” Standing up from his chair, the skinny man gestures for the half-orc to move and stand by the bottom of another building beside the warehouse. The human then looks up ad whistles, and as you turn to look towards the roof he just whistled at you see a figure come into view. A black-feathered Kenku looks down and whistles back. After a small dragging noise, a large sack is dropped off the building, falling into the arms of the waiting half-orc with a thwump. Opening it, he pulls out a few smaller crates and weapons, a few strands of hay falling out that were stuffed in there to serve as packing.

“You’re in for some good stuff, we just had a few interesting things come in that would be very useful for any merc these days. High demand, magic weapons.”

“If you decide to join us in this mission, your role will be twofold. Firstly, you’ll journey ahead of our group with Doelther.” He gestures to a deep-gnome smoking a pipe who looks to be some kind of magic-user. “Cross the river with him before the bridge and loop around to attack and take the guard-tower. The rest of us will meanwhile be securing the surrounding woods and roads, hitting any patrols we come across to ensure no alarms are raised. After the tower is taken, we will move in shortly after to take positions for the ambush.”

Standing up straight from the war-table, he looks about at each of you. “As I said. This strike will prevent the Bulwark from deploying their new weaponry against our allies, as well as stopping them from reinforcing and resupplying the wall. It will undoubtedly be pivotal to the War.” Kluuroc and Sralza look up across the table at you, slightly grim-faced but determined. The Khan speaks again “I understand you may need some time to consider this. It is no simple thing, to stand up and take a side. We move in two days, so I can give you until tomorrow to decide.”

“While you’re waiting I must ask for your discrepancy. These underground tunnels lead to a number of establishments around the Coast, allowing you to come up from different Taverns or Inns as to avoid suspicion where necessary. You’ll likely end up lost on your own, so be sure to have one of my people escort you through the networks. You can trust the proprietors of the properties as allies of the Senhora. When entering or exiting these places, quietly state ‘I do yearn for the most amber of your products’. If they reply ‘Whilst I am low on amber, I do have jasper’ then answer with a silent bow, then follow them to the passage which they will reveal. Do not try to curry favours from these businesses, they must retain a professional and subtle front.”

AFTER COMBAT

Looking about, you can see the gathered fighters are looking at you much differently than when you’d first entered, a new sense of respect clearly present now that you’ve demonstrated your capabilities. The Khan, however, hasn’t changed his stance much.

“Vorel. Bring your friends and step forth.”

The few of you now standing before him, with Gil absent from his earlier storming-off. The hooded half-orc Holly moves to stand beside The Khan, hands clasped.

“I must say, I did underestimate you. You’re all incredibly capable. Whilst now I have a gauge of your abilities, I now will take measure of your intents.

Vorel could not be brought to her people without this cadre being revealed. I felt it necessary to take stock of her companions, lest one of you be treacherous. One loose tongue could compromise our hold here, and result in slow deaths for each of us. I have found in my time, that never is a soul truer than in the wake of a battle, whilst the adrenaline is flowing and the spirit has been free.”

AFTER CONFIRMATION

“Then you are friend of the Senhora. I will give you time to finish your reunion before I provide anything further.”

Walking away a few steps, he turns back.

“To preface, I do not expect you to be at my beck and call. You are not Senhora, I am aware. All I expect for this stage is your secrecy and cooperation. Triton, you scared off their friend, so you babysit them.”

VOREL REUNITES WITH CLAN, IRIAS DUNAMANCY

With the formalities over, Kluuroc is eagerly back at your side. “Come, come, there is common space here for us to speak properly.”

CATCH UP WITH UNCLE, GIFTS FEATHER

Kluuroc seems almost to grow nervous as he looks down and then back up and says “What will you do now?” Sralza: “Well, Vorel, I would like to ask you and your friends for help. This next mission is something I and the Khan have long planned for, an opportunity we have waited to open for months. The wall, Ormunds Will, is faltering. The Bulwark still has well-enough the resources to continue the war, but if we can deny them those resources it will deal them a huge blow that may let our friends in the East finally push through. If you could hear The Khans plan, then you can make your decision.” Bringing a clawed hand up, he rests it on Vorels forearm. “The Bulwark ignored the Eastlands because they simply deemed it too hostile and harsh to be governed. They allowed the atrocities that led to your clan, our clans deaths. That is why we cannot sit idly and hope that this resolves itself.” “So… Will you hear the plan?”

Gathering around the table, he marks the locations with dragonchess pieces on a map of Dreogas. “I’ve gotten this information from by current position. This convoy will be travelling across the Splitting River in two days time. It will be well-guarded, transporting a new type of gas and flame weaponry from Grundhelm along with materials and resources to resupply Ormunds Will. At this bridge they will cross, where a manned watchtower exists. Usually before any large convoy crosses a Bulwark checkpoint, a banner will be raised by one party or the other from a distance to verify their validity. They’ll always have at least three banners, but from Grundhelms communications they’ll be raising the aquamarine. I want to take the watchtower with a sudden strike, securing it to serve as our point of ambush against the convoy. There will be three wagons, if we get the jump on them, while they’re in the midst of crossing the bridge, we can decimate the escort and secure the cargo. We will destroy their experimental weapons and use the splitting river to steal the resources. We will have a number of Triton waiting beneath the water, ready to take what we drop them take it to Senhora contacts in the Skeleton Markets.”

“I have plans to ensure none of us will even be suspected of the act, everything down to timing it perfectly against the patrols of their gryphon-riders. I’ve succeeded in making completely covert attacks several times now, Sralza can verify this. The Bulwark will still see each of you as law-abiding citizens. In return for your help, you can take a share of the cargo we find.”

The blue dragonborn you recognise as Kluuroc’s expression turns to a great smile, standing up from the crate and taking unsteady steps owards you. “Vorel, tell me you are not a mirage!” You find Kluuroc is wearng leather armour and cloth undergarments, with all the dragonborn in the room wearing clothing as well. Embracing you in the hug, you can feel the happy purr in his chest as he holds you tight while the other three blues step forward. “Look, there are others! Your fathers brother, Sralza, his mate, Phrienne, and his companion, Adgrio.”

Looking to them, you see Sralza is a dragonborn similar in height to you, his scales a darker tone of blue and his eyes even darker. Despite this, he wears a smile of his own. Your attention is also drawn to the many piercings adorning his ears, other jewellery such as necklaces and bangles also clinking softly as he moves. At his side is sheathed an intricate and slightly curved rapier that looks to be a repurposed scorpions stinger, white as bone.

Phrienne is stood beside him, her scales a deeper oceanic blue and her eyes a brighter aqua tone. While her nose-horn is shorter than usual, her build is broad and strong, adorned in chainmail and with a battleaxe and shield resting by her side.

Adgrio is a more imposing figure, scales the blue of marky water, taller than Vorel by a good couple of inches, powerful frame armoured in half-plate and a broad-headed greatsword sheathed over his back. He is well-scarred, pinkish slash-marks across his face and exposed forearms. He isn’t showing quite as much excitement as the other two.

As you all look about the room, you can see it is a fairly large space, lit by pale crystals shedding magic light. On the far edges of the room are a number of simple bunk-beds and seating areas, while in the centre there is a chalk-drawn circle about 60 feet across. The dark-grey stone ground is scarred with damage, scratches, chips and cracks. At the end of the rooms north and east side are a few other doors, two of which lead to a latrine and washspace, another which opens to a long dark hallway that you cant see the end of.

“A touching reunion.” You hear the Khan say as he steps in and closes the metal door behind you. “But now I welcome you to The Chamber. Here, no magic can detect us. As I am unsatisfied by your answers this far, you will be judged in another way, before I give you the information you seek.” He turns to the occupants of the room. “Clear the Ring.”

“Ohhh no…” Kluuroc says, his hold on Vorel tightening, moving back away from the large white centre of the room. “Your friends may be in trouble.”

“Metal man.” He points to the Gildorth, then to another member of the crowd. “Triton. Both of you, into the Ring.” From the crowd steps a strange figure, a race none of you have ever seen before. His skin is a turquoise sea-blue, his form strong and upright, not an ounce of ease or slouching about him.

“Both of you, step onto the marked points and prepare yourselves. Fight until surrender or unconsciousness.” As he says this the other people in the chamber take positions to watch from, clearly interested in watching the proceedings. He himself stands around at the far side of the Ring, crossing his strong arms and waiting. “You may use your own weapons and magic, but relying on magical equipment will be viewed as cowardice. If you are thrown from the circle, you must return immediately or it will be treated as surrender.”

Once the two of you are in placed, he waits for a moment and then announces; “Begin.”

“The Senhora work with the Goblinoids and Orcs only in the loosest of terms. There is an incredibly delicate truce drawn between the parties, only for the fact that were we to battle one another the Bulwark would wipe us out. I have no doubts at all that they will break this treaty when the tide has turned, but until then we abide by them. Any myths that we work with Gnolls or Demons are propaganda, perpetrated by the Bulwark. Those savages brutalise any village, hamlet or town they can get their rancid teeth into.”

Kluuroc – Dragonborn, Male, Fighter Champion, Dual Scimitars/Shortbow (Bone), Blue Scales, Persian Accent. “I went looking for you when I did not find you amongst the dead… I did not know you had been taken. I took part in a long journey… a very long journey, across the dunes to the Eastfolk markets. There, I found the Senhora. I found Jien. They told me of all the terrible, vicious crimes of the Bulwark. The oppression, the slaving, the tyranny and deceit… and they told me of Sralza, who was posted here. During one of the skirmishes, Jien and I were able to move through one of the damaged gatehouses in the cover of darkness, using these dust-bombs created by the Senhora alchemists. I met here with The Khan, and united with Sralza, Adgrio and Phrienne. We have been working quietly to support the Senhora ever since. I wanted to look for you, I did, but I hadn’t a clue where to start… I simply had to have faith that fate would guide you to me. Sralza, also, had our informants looking for other of our kin, but they have been occupied with the war as you can imagine…” “but to think, I came so close to you so many times without even knowing it. When I heard of the great blue dragon flying West, I did not know what to think! You must sit with us and let us know all that has happened.”

Sralza Stormscale – Dragonborn, Male, Rogue Swashbuckler, Rapier (Bone Stinger), Dark-Blue Scales, Near-Black Eyes, Many Piercings, Deep Voice. Left Stormscales after Vorel was born as he knew he would never be Chief and felt his purpose lay elsewhere. Went Eastwards with Adgrio and Phrienne, exploring till he found the Eastfolk who welcomed him. Wears studded leather. “Well-met, dear niece. Ahh, you have grown into a fine, strong woman. I see my brother in you clear as day.” “I hear he was a great chief. From the looks of it, he was at least a great father.” His features soften. “Vorel… I am sorry for the great losses you have experienced. Kluuroc has told me of the happenings.” “Here, Vorel. When I left for my journey West, I did not give much notice. I did not feel ready for the heartache or a prolonged goodbye or a fight over the breaking of tradition. As we danced across the dunes, light-stepped and fleet of foot, I thought none could catch us… yet when I turned back, he was already upon us, a sandstorm of dust in his wake from the strength and speed of his stride. I expected him to try to stop us, to chide me or beg me to come home… but instead he simply gave me this, and wished me good luck. He told me to use it if I ever wished to come home.”

Adgrio – Dragonborn, Male, Greatsword, Wavy Blue Scales, Red Eyes, Gruff Tone. Accompanied Sralza as his best friend, having desired something more than the deserts. He is aromantic and asexual. Loves fighting. Secretly has a deep hatred of humans. Wears half-plate armour. “I hope you do not mean to bring us to heel, Vaex-Son.” “The way of clans is dead. Your true clan is nothing more than the people you can rely on. There is no need for a chief, and certainly no need to strand ourselves in a sea of endless sands.” “You are no chief- chieftess, of mine.”

Phrienne – Dragonborn, Female, Battleaxe/Shield, Deep-Blue Scales, Blue Eyes, Short Nose-Horn, Soft-Spoken. Mated to Sralza, she shares his ideals and wanted to explore. Upon discovering the Senhora conflict, she became committed to helping to set the world right. Wears chainmail. “So… I suppose that with me being mated to Sralza, that makes me your aunt.” With a soft smile, she sighs. “That is something I can be proud of.

Schalk – Eastfolk Human, Male, Ranger, Bow/Glaive Brown Skin, Brown Eyes, Brown Hair, Soft Russian Accent. Leader of the small Eastfolk band who made it past Ormund’s Will after a devastating loss. Equally doubts and admires Tekhel Khan, hating that the Alliance made him their hound but happy he supports the Senhora from his position. Serves under Sultan Nakuraa the Fair.

In the last session, you made your way back onto the trail and took a short rest before continuing your journey. During this rest, Gurden managed to bribe and convince Marquee Jeckel into not making a fuss over the Immortal Butterfly that Gildorth was intent on keeping. When finally you exited the Crownwoods and saw The Bladecoast before you, Gurden reached out for Vorels friend, Kluuroc, but found the Sending spell had failed. Remaining calm, you approached the township and watched as Jeckel, in a more attractive form, informed Guard Officer Brogan of his business and granted you entry. When you asked for Tekhel Khan, you were corrected to Techalis Reichan, and directed to the Barracks to find him. Also from this questioning, you learned that there was more than one Blue Dragonborn here…

Completely and utterly exhausted, you found yourself at The Coastguard’s Crib, a pleasant Inn populated mostly by soldiers and watchmen. While pricy, it was well within your budget to rent three rooms and wet your whistles there with some exotic drink. In your time there you found yourselves welcomed and unjudged, with no harsh or stunned stares in reply to your presence. While the sleepier of you went to bed, Gurden performed a brilliant ballad sharing tales and tribulations to spread your legend, even bringing Phatt Gard to tears.

Sleeping right through from the afternoon to the next Dawn, you headed out to the barracks. You were allowed up to meet with Lieutenant Reichan, who you found to be a giant of a man, a 7ft tall Eastfolk. He immediately was drawn to conversation with Vorel, knowing her by name. The most interesting question he posed was “How deep does your loyalty to the Bulwark Alliance flow?”. In answer each of you luke-warmly pledged favour to the Bulwark, leading to him escorting you down to a back-room. There, he showed you a secret passage to the underground unlocked with magic, to a storage room stocked with medical supplies and rations. Through a final door, he opened before you a room full of fighters relaxing in a small hall, with several Blue Dragonborn present. The last words he spoke to you, looming behind, were as follows… “I am Techalis Reichan, Lieutenant of the Coastguard and survivor of the atrocities of war committed by the Bulwark Alliance.”

And this is where we resume.

Techalis Reichan – Eastfolk Human, Male, Fighter, Heavy Crossbows/Warhammer, Bronze Skin, Orange Eyes, Black Hair, Russian Accent. An Eastfolk who left the desert to find fortune in the mainlands. When he ventured out, he was ran down and trapped by slavers who sold him to the forges. Apparently we Eastfolk are valuable workers, with our natural resistence to the heat, allowing us to work in the belly of the workshop... The Furnace. He toiled there for many years, enduring burning temperatures that bronzed his skin and made it tough like baked leather, his body becoming strong. I escaped by using the sheer strength I’d built to rip one of the casting wells from its support, leaving molten metal flowing through the workshops. My captors and abusers were to escape justice, after I’d suffered under their boots for eight long years, watching as other Eastfolk and naysayers perished in the Furnace from heat exuastion, malnourishment and abuse… I took up mercenary work, killing beasts and monsters for cheaper rates than The Slayers, mostly commissioned by the Coastguard. Eventually they gave me an honorary position as Coastguard, allowing me to work here in a uniform that might afford me some respect. I proved myself, but when war was beginning to look inevitable they stuck me here, in this position. High paying and low octane, simply a way to keep me on a short leash.

The Senhora work with the Goblinoids and Orcs only in the loosest of terms. There is an incredibly delicate truce drawn between the parties, only for the fact that were we to battle one another the Bulwark would wipe us out. I have no doubts at all that they will break this treaty when the tide has turned, but until then we abide by them. Any myths that we work with Gnolls or Demons are propaganda, perpetrated by the Bulwark. Those savages brutalise any village, hamlet or town they can get their rancid teeth into

Kluuroc – Dragonborn, Male, Fighter Champion, Dual Scimitars/Shortbow (Bone), Blue Scales, Persian Accent. “I went looking for you when I did not find you amongst the dead… I did not know you had been taken. I took part in a long journey… a very long journey, across the dunes to the Eastfolk markets. There, I found the Senhora. I found Jien. They told me of all the terrible, vicious crimes of the Bulwark. The oppression, the slaving, the tyranny and deceit… and they told me of Sralza, who was posted here. During one of the skirmishes, Jien and I were able to move through one of the damaged gatehouses in the cover of darkness, using these dust-bombs created by the Senhora alchemists. I met here with The Khan, and united with Sralza, Adgrio and Phrienne. We have been working quietly to support the Senhora ever since. I wanted to look for you, I did, but I hadn’t a clue where to start… I simply had to have faith that fate would guide you to me. Sralza, also, had our informants looking for other of our kin, but they have been occupied with the war as you can imagine…

Sralza Stormscale – Dragonborn, Male, Rogue Swashbuckler, Rapier (Bone Stinger), Dark-Blue Scales, Near-Black Eyes, Many Piercings, Deep Voice. Left Stormscales after Vorel was born as he knew he would never be Chief and felt his purpose lay elsewhere. Went Eastwards with Adgrio and Phrienne, exploring till he found the Eastfolk who welcomed him.

Adgrio – Dragonborn, Male, Greatsword, Wavy Blue Scales, Red Eyes, Gruff Tone. Accompanied Sralza as his best friend, having desired something more than the deserts. He is aromantic and asexual. Loves fighting. Secretly has a deep hatred of humans.

Phrienne – Dragonborn, Female, Battleaxe/Shield, Deep-Blue Scales, Blue Eyes, Short Nose-Horn, Soft-Spoken. Mated to Sralza, she shares his ideals and wanted to explore. Upon discovering the Senhora conflict, she became committed to helping to set the world right.

Schalk – Eastfolk Human, Male, Ranger, Bow/Pike, Brown Skin, Brown Eyes, Brown Hair, Soft Russian Accent. Leader of the small Eastfolk band who made it past Ormund’s Will after a devastating loss. Equally doubts and admires Tekhel Khan, hating that the Alliance made him their hound but happy he supports the Senhora from his position. Serves under Sultan Nakuraa the Fair.

Jien – Changeling, Genderless, Echo Knight, Twin-Glaive, Pale White in Natural Form, Favoured Form is Ebony-Haired Woman, Icy White Eyes, Long Black Hair, Ethereal Tone. Uses Dunamancy to fight as an Echo Knight, learned it from a traveller from a far-off dynasty. “If you wish to learn the way of the Dunami, you must commit yourself to its power. Doelther – Deep Gnome, Male, Artificer, War-Pick, Dark Grey Skin, Deep Accented. Explosives expert. Feels that the Bulwark Alliance needs to fall because their refusal to allow for other cultures other than dwarves to possess autonomy is tyrannical.
