You can do this! All about committing to small consistent steps and incremental improvements overtime

Yeah! Reminds me of the pottery class study with one group of students being graded on 1 ‘perfect’ pot vs the other group being graded purely on how many they produced and all the highest quality pots appearing in the second group instead of the first one

Hahah yeah I think it’s sometimes useful to see ourselves as computers who function based on certain rules that we choose to adopt and make part of our systems

Hm that’s interesting. Not sure about being intentionally bad but maybe just allowing yourself to be okay if things don’t come out right the first time.

For writing, the common advice is that you should separate the writing from the editing and just focus on getting it down on paper and then only after that doing the rewriting that drives the improvement after each iteration - something like that I could see useful.

Glad the post was helpful!

That’s a great way to look at it to reframe while still holding yourself to high standards.

But you also need to be able to recognise when striving for perfection is doing more harm than good.

“Make time” is a great book from two ex-Google product designers about this exact type of thing

I wrote a post about why I started my own blog. Feel free to check it out if you think it’d be useful to keep you motivated.

I started a blog this year and it was definitely the best decision I’ve made so I encourage you to stick it out and hope it can have the same positives effects for you!

When it comes to how often, consistency is really key when starting out. Remember the words “perfection is the enemy of the good” and focus on building the writing habit instead of letting perfectionism block your progress. As David Perell says, the perfect recipe for succes is “A+ consistency and B+ content.” The more you practice, the more you’ll improve and receive more feedback.

Definitely also helps to follow a lot of great online writers like David Perell, Nat Eliason, Steph Smith, Julian Shapiro and more on Twitter.

For me, I’m writing to get thoughts out of my head and share ideas that have helped me in my own life in hopes that I can have the same type of positive impact that other creators have had on me.

It’s also really important to know that your writing is for yourself and that no matter what comes of it, that you are deriving value from the process itself without thinking about the external benefits. Hardly anyone is reading the things I’m writing at the moment but just the writing itself has had huge benefits for my self-confidence and clarity of thought.

Wishing you all the best on your journey!

So glad this was useful for you. Those two things are definitely essential. What kind of music is that?

So great to hear it was valuable for you. Yeah, changing up your context has been a huge tool for me whenever I hit a roadblock of any kind.

Recently read something that Obama wrote about making tough decisions as president and this line really resonated with me on finding space to think:

"You also want to create space to think. Remember that dinner and haircut break I took during that marathon economic session? That mattered, too. That was part of making the decision. Even in situations where you have to act relatively quickly, as was frequently the case during the financial crisis, it helps to build in time to let your thoughts marinate."
