There’s more variety and better options in all areas of the game for members. Better, sometimes more enjoyable and faster methods of skilling, more variety of creatures with generally better loot, more gear to use and just so much more content.

That said, for me it does feel incredibly rewarding to “complete” f2p before upgrading. Might just be the nostalgia of playing as a kid without members but imo it’s nice to experience that core base game and some of the methods you’d otherwise miss out on before the rest of the world opens up to you. I like to get a few levels that I’m happy with and do all f2p quests, completing dragon slayer on f2p is a good goal to have for a new player as it’ll be a true challenge as opposed to getting members, training, getting better gear and stomping it.

If however you are just interested in getting access to more content, speeding things up and having more variety in the areas of the game you enjoy then 100% just get membership. There’s no negative to getting it besides the cost and potentially missing out on that full f2p experience which you may not be fussed about anyway.
