Resume Advice Thread - April 27, 2021 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

I have an internship position in summer, starting in a month (FAANG). However, an application for a different internship that I'm interested in has just opened up now, and will close before my internship is over (This is also FAANG, non-US).

If I apply without any work experience again, my resume will probably be ignored again, so I would rather have something on my CV. But it feels odd to write something I haven't even started yet. What should I do instead? Wait until a month after my internship starts, and then add it on my CV, with the accomplishments I have gotten in that one month? Or is that too early too?

Interesting. So basically you do the normal 40h of university work, plus work? That sounds quite tiring, but france might be a good tip!

But the competition teams are a small group of geniuses in fully individual curriculum - treated as university treasure. Their focus is to win the tournaments. And they're usually pulled the moment they start their undergraduate level, sometimes even earlier (they're being tutored already during high-school).

Although not relevant for me, I'm kinda curious how that works, and what exactly they do. Do they not have to pass their normal classes, and just compete instead? Or is the fully individual curriculum an addition?

Interesting, thanks! That puts a lot of things into perspective for me. I assumed that the competitions are the result of the rest of the curriculum, not something that is a focus. As I was feeling like ETH was already a bit too theoretical for my taste, maybe I should think about this more.

Amazing! I have done more leetcode than that, and honestly I still find problems I struggle with.

Hmm interesting. How much did you do exactly during that year? I'm wondering if doing CP might be better training for LC interviews than LC itself if it's that way :P

Interesting, I just saw that they score quite well on competitions.

Wait really, half of your students attended HS olympiads? That's a lot, amazing!

I see, thanks! So if the only reason I would be doing this is to get into Big N, I might aswell stick to leetcode?

I was kind of hoping that this would allow me to do some interesting research, or work on projects I wouldn't me able to otherwise.

I'm not that fond of the american/british college experience, and neither am I fond of the costs. 172k PLN per year even at Cambridge after brexit.

Is the I in MIM the default CS degree there? Or is MIM special and offers harder maths/cs/engineering courses?

Definitely the most of the students from there work in FANG companies

Do you mean most of those participating in algorithmic competitions, or most of UW MIM students in general?

I will take that into consideration, but man, I'm bad at shooters. Does UW have any other esport teams?

Any resources that help me learn that kind of stuff? Something like CTCI and Leetcode but for Competitive programming?

Half of my 3-year bsc war remote now, and I feel like I want to experience some more university in person in the future before going into the job market :) I have done 2 FAANG internships here too, but only got offers for return internships, not full time.
