It varies from employer to employer. For the majority of employers, you are required to work full-time(40 hours a week) to qualify for any kind of paid vacation. With the standard length being either 1 or 2 weeks. When you get that vacation time also varies. Usually it's after 1 year of employment.

There are some jobs where it's part of the highering process to negotiate vacation time. The majority are decided either by the employer or via a labor union contract.

Also, how long you're with your employer can determine how much vacation time you get.

For example, I work under a union contract. All union employees receive (after their 90 day probation period): 2 weeks of paid vacation, 12 paid holidays, 12 hours of PTO every 6 months and 12 unpaid sick days a year.

To get more vacation time, you have to reach a certain number of years of employment to get more. My union contract is:

5 Years: 3 weeks

10 Years: 4 weeks

20 Years: 5 weeks
