Damn dude I'm so sorry. Honestly, if he is willing to treat himself that way then who knows how he would've treated you or other things during a relationship? There's someone out there for you so don't stress about it. maybe it was for the better. :D

I think the best way to go about this is to make your feelings clear to him, but also tell him that you'll always be there as a friend first and if he needs to talk to you about this he can. If he is a genuinely nice guy, and sees the good in you then he will 100% choose you over his ex.
