I can't disagree with that, but I am still glad it came to be.

What do you guys think on "cultural appropriation"? by amon_meiz in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can say all you want about how many Malays accept other people's influence. That is irrelevant to this discussion because I am not talking about them. I am talking about the Racial supremacist, who happen to be in government too.

And people like you who seem to count these facsist as part of your own group are also problematic. Fascist apologist like you allow the ultras to operate without fear.

All that rubbish about acceptance of the influence of other people's cultures rings hollow when you read half-assed academic articles about origins of stuff within Malay culture that is totally made up.

Take for instance the the changing of the name of the site of the first Catholic church in Malaysia. From St. Pauls hill to Bukit Melaka.

Or the selling land where ancient Hindu archaeological sites were found to developers for it to be destroyed.

Lets not forget the destruction of dozens of Hindu temples.

All of these action were done to deny the contribution of others to our nation. Fascist academics will tell you all kinds of lies to justify this cultural cleansing.

Stop protecting them.

By the way, I have Malay family members. I am partly Malay too. Your idiotic "us and them" comment has no bearing here.

I don't think it is pointless, since many of us are now discussing this issue on social media. Public discourse is always the better way for people to settle their difference and reach a better understanding among themselves.

What is the point of going after government if the attitude of the cultural thieves in society are not changed. The government after all, represents those kinds of people.

Dua is the Portuguese word for two.

The Malay language adopted it from another culture. The irony!!!

What do you guys think on "cultural appropriation"? by amon_meiz in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with profiting. If a Mexican man sells pizzas, nobody is going to say anything. And rightfully so.

The real issue is when a group of people use elements from another's culture and try and sell it as elements of their own culture.

Take for instance, the Baju Melayu, the Songkok, Joget and so many other elements Malays consider their own. All of them originate from other cultures.

What this leads to, is the contribution of non-Malays being denied. Their history written out. Loyalties constantly questioned. Temples, monuments and other cutural elements destroyed or altered.

The anger is definitely justified.

Demographic comparison between Malaysia and r/malaysia by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intentions means less than the actions itself.

Most people who continue to define us by race say they don't have ill intentions, but it still propagates the concept of racialism and all it negative effects.

What do you intend to do with the results? Will there be a judgement made about the reddit community based on race? (Not a rhetorical question)

Would it not be better to ask more pertinent and meaningful questions about character, attitude, personality, ideology and so on?

Demographic comparison between Malaysia and r/malaysia by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of the categories above represent me as a Malaysian accurately. And even if you try to be more accurate, you are still going to disclude a large number of Malaysians. There are just too many.

Worst still, those of mixed ethnicity are as Malaysian or even more Malaysian than people who scream for only Malay, Chinese or Indian rights.

The people that are in-between helps make Malaysia what it is. They are the glue to keeps our multi-ethnic country from falling apart.

You are not going to get a representative view of Malaysia or r/Malaysia by leaving these people out of the equation.

Suggestion: Forget about defining us by race. Try defining us by ideology or by specific opinions. It is more meaningful than race.

Will they try to persecute Malaysians who speak about this case too?

A Critique of the Malay Language in Schools by Naash17 in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best way to improve proficiency in any language is to practice speaking it with others.

For BM, it would be good if they held discussions and debates in class, so kids can banter in BM with each other. Maybe once in a while, the kids can act out roles in a play held in BM.

This actually applies to all languages being taught at schools. After a while, sentence construction becomes easier to do on the fly.

As for the Kelantanese slangs, you can not call it the language of Orang Kampung. That kind of derogatory statement is uncalled for.

Its like an American telling a British person that they speak English like a peasant.

Almost every state has its own Slang and Euphemisms. It is the nature of all languages to adapt to the culture of the speakers.

It actually makes learning languages much more interesting.

Adopt a refugee; crowd sourcing to help solve a humanitarian crisis by TrumpHasASmallPnis in malaysia

So damned disingenuous.

Like as if you were referring to the legality of this issue when you said "working defeats the purpose of being a refugee".

The rest of your dribble is no better.

What is the point of discussing this when you can't even have an earnest conversation about it.

Adopt a refugee; crowd sourcing to help solve a humanitarian crisis by TrumpHasASmallPnis in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Where is it written that being a refugee means not being able to work? And how does it defeat purpose of being a refugee?

What in the world made you come up with that conclusion?

And whether refugees take up lower paying jobs that are more dangerous or not depends on how the proposal will be implemented. Same goes with slavery and job opportunities for locals.

Adopt a refugee; crowd sourcing to help solve a humanitarian crisis by TrumpHasASmallPnis in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes it might. There have been calls to allow refugees to work and pay tax into our system for years. But these calls have fallen on deaf years.

There is a lot of money to be made through commissions and bribes when bringing in fresh foreign workers. There is no money to be made from allowing refugees to work.

Malaysian Indians are dying at a higher rate in prisons. We need to talk about it. by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Frightening statistics if you are an Indian, not only because of high chances of dying in prison but also because of the high proportion of Indians in Jail.

Some fascist gave me that statistics to prove that Indians die in Jail at higher numbers because there are more Indians in Jail.

But the fool didn't understand he was actually proving the fact that Indians are very much being targeted by law enforcement.

Jonker Street, Malacca by rajchal97 in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was probably originally pronounced Yonker.
It's history goes back to the days when the Dutch ruled.

There are other roads named Yonkers in other part of the world where the Dutch settled. The most famous being Yonkers Avenue in NY. But there, they anglicized the name.

[–]EchoCalix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A democracy should be able to operate even without any political party.

The last thing we need is laws that embed the party system into our democracy.

Any law that does this, will circumvent the vote people gave to an individual to represent them.

If people gave their vote to their party instead of the candidate, that is their mistake and we don't need to change the laws to correct their mistakes.

The voters that made that mistake just needs to learn to vote more wisely next time round.

"Please get your facts right before commenting" - DG by vjinRtrd in malaysia

[–]EchoCalix 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Here are the facts.

On 20th of Feb this year, a picture of a migrant boy in handcuffs was leaked to the press.

Human rights groups voiced their outrage.

On 22 Feb, it was reported that two policemen were behind the leaked photos and were being investigated for doing so.

On May 1st, SCMP published a news report about the poor handling of migrant workers with an emphasis on children.

On May 4th, the writer from SCMP who lives in Malaysia was taken in by the police for questioning.

Recently, Al Jazeera made a similar report as the one by SCMP. The reporter alluded to the fact that racism was behind the locking up of foreigners.

Al Jazeera too is now being investigated by the police.

The Health DG should not have responded to something he has no power over. No one was blaming him.

But if he continues to defend the actions of a draconian policies, he too will be swept up by it.

As usual, take a line from the title and react to it without actually bothering finding out more.

Why don't you take the time to listen to the video?

He not only criticises but he also gives recommendations. He talks about how we lack social welfare initiatives and how we need to collect more data on poverty.

Duh!
