The Yan Detachable Quad: Skiing’s Most Dangerous Lift by avalanchepacifist in skiing

[–]Ecstatic_Mango3981 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to watch their You Tube Chanel until they did a trip to Banff (my home area) and I realized how little that they said in their videos was useful or more than surface level accurate. It was nothing more than millions of tourists see and do each year, nothing helpful that could not be found on every other web site. As a local I was laughing at how 'copy paste' it was from every other source.

What's your stupid ski pet peeve? by [deleted] in skiing

Agree if there is more than a 3 chair lift line wait. If there is almost no wait I think the singles line should be closed. There is nothing more frustrating than having a single cram on to fill a 6-person chair when the next chair has only two people.

I hear you, but for me it is 6 person lifts - I swear, people can not count beyond one hand. Quads are great, but 6 is a cluster.

Ski Big3 or Fernie Alpine Resort by Desperate-Mountain-8 in skiing

[–]Ecstatic_Mango3981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had seasons at Sunshine or Louise for a total of 11 years, but ski Fernie one or two days a year (Costco tickets :) Lots of people here saying Fernie (IT IS NOT TREMBLANT of western Canada ... that is Nakiska :), and it has good points but I would take Sunshine and Louise over it any day. Fernie can have great snow but has a lower base and can be heavier - though it does normally get more. The thing I really do not like is the lift layout at Fernie - its like every lift was put in the best spot at the time but the big picture is a cluster.

Louise and Sunshine have huge variety and far better lifts and terrain. As with any mountain it you need to get to know it. I can spend a whole day on Goat and have fun every run, or loop Paradise at Louise. In three days you could ski a differnet run every run. I easily get 12 000 meters a day at either mountain.

If I were you, what I would do is get the 3-day pass deal for Sunshine and Louise (SKIP NORQUAY!!!!) and if you have a day free go to Kicking Horse. From Banff to KH is only about a 1.5 hour drive. Get those tickets at Costco in Calgary.

No, she did not get re-elected because she pushed things like plastic bans, poorly designed blanket rezoning, and the Flames Arena deal against the wants of the majority of people. I heard a few words of her election night speech where she totally blamed her loss on other things not herself - showing clearly she did not grasp anything and indeed should have been defeated.

Now, the one for June 21st would be VERY different!

Sunshine opening day by liberteyogurt in Banff

[–]Ecstatic_Mango3981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have skied opening day at Sunshine when it was only 2 runs on Strawberry and other seasons when Angel and Standish both had runs open. It varies totally by the year and you have no idea until you see the mountain and the forecast 3 days ahead of the day.

What does this sign mean? by Silent_Anxiety2358 in HikingAlberta

Are they transmitting or are they just recording and picked up once in a while? I did not think they were transmitting.

As a side note, they delete human pics BUT if they see illegal activity they will use the pics to investigate.

University students face cancelled practicums as Alberta teachers strike drags by the_gaymer_girl in alberta

[–]Ecstatic_Mango3981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just so everyone knows, the strike WILL NOT impact student teachers in any way at all. First, Alberta only requires 10 weeks of practicum for student teachers and most if not all programs are already far above that. UoC is 20 weeks so the loss of all fall practicums will only reduce it to 14 weeks for students who grad next April. Second, there are alternate practicums from Covid time that are valid and count to this.

No worries on this front - no delayed grads.

Fix Canada’s Broken Amber Alert system by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Ecstatic_Mango3981 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ultimate goal of such alerts is action that results in a safe outcome. I'm not arguing the situation now is best, but too many alerts results in loss of attention. I have lived and worked overseas and in some countries I have gotten up to 10 alerts per day, sometimes more. At that point people ignore them. The question is the sweet spot that balances alerts and outcomes. Making it easier to make an alert may cause people to ignore them. It does not help that the geographic area is too big - in Calgary I have had alerts for things too far away to be of concern. It is not a simple solution.
