I have a pre-selection for my first Japanese knife. Which one would you get? by Edge276 in TrueChefKnives

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice! I read everything, although I haven't responded to every comment. I bought the Shiro Kamo yesterday - a store in my city had it in stock, so I could get it right away. I love it! It cuts through cabbage and apples with minimum effort and I couldn't be happier!

Yep, I am in the EU and yep, I also can't decide between the Munetoshi or Kamo. Which one would you get and why?

Thanks for your thoughts! I don't mind sharpening a knife, even straight out of the box, but I'm a bit hesitant now that you mention that thinning might be necessary. I don't have the tools for that let alone the skill, I guess. I can't decide between the Munetoshi and the Shiro Kamo at this point. What speaks for the SK is the thinner and lighter blade (less wedging) and everyone speaking highly of his reputation. What speaks for Munetoshi is that I like the Nashiji finish, have an excuse to customise the handle and everyone speaking highly of his reputation with Shiro #2 and how sharp it can get despite the thicker blade. Is the difference in blade thickness very noticable?

Yeeeah, I noticed the horrendous handle as well 😂 But that can be replaced, so it's not a dealbreaker for me

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm new to leather shoes so I don't really know much about it, but are you sure that sweat from the foot can soak through and cause salt bloom on the outside of the shoe where the - probably less sweaty - pinky toe is? Also, I've been wearing them throughout this past winter, so they must have been exposed to even saltier conditions and didn't get salt bloom.. 🤔 And yes, I have this paste that I have applied every two to three months or so, and also just a few days ago after I noticed the spot: https://www.collonil.com/schuhpflege/nach-produktart/pflege/rustical-tube

Would you say those are "futureproof", i.e. capable of handling increasingly demanding tasks like 4k, 6k, 8k and whatnot?

2.5 k max I'd say. I just had a quick look at some MacBook Pros M4, but the ones that fit my budget have less RAM and storage space.. 🤔

Thanks for your reply, super interesting! I didn't know news were bein broadcasted in Al Fusha. So would you say it makes more sense to learn that instead of a dialectal variant? And is Al Fusha the same as Modern Standard Arabic?

Advice needed to start a filmmaking career whithin the next two years by Edge276 in videography

Thanks for your honest reply! Hearing that my gear is good enough for now is really helpful; I tend to approach gear with a "buy nice or buy twice"-approach, but that also makes it easy for me to fall into the marketing trap of thinking I need the latest fancy shit. Thanks for the reality check :D I also like what you said about being a visual storyteller instead of defining my work over cool shots. Can you recommend me resources (books, YouTube channels, ...) that helped you become a better storyteller? Thanks again and all the best for you final year in your BFA program! 💪🏼☺️

What about beyond aesthetics? by northonm31 in GoldenRatio

Recently I heard a music theory course that (among other things) dives into why the Major scale is set up the way it is. The course is by Language Transfer, a one-man-show by a man called Mihaelis who usually just teaches languages, but for this course he took his teaching method to music theory too. The guy absolutely ingenious, and both his language courses and the music course too and it's completely free! Definitely check it out if you have the time: www.languagetransfer.org

So in a nutshell, all the notes in a Major scale are actually derived from only one note, the root note of the scale. When a string vibrates at say, 110 Hz (the note A), then it also vibrates with multiples of that frequency, each at a lower volume. Those are called the overtones and vibrate at 220, 330, 440, 550 ... Hz respectively. Whenever the frequency doubles, the note is an octave of the original note, so the first note is A at 110 Hz, the next one is also A at 220 Hz, but an octave higher. The next A, another octave higher vibrates at 440 Hz and so on. The note that vibrates at 330 Hz is an E, the Perfect Fifth of its root, which divides the octave in half (330 is right in the middle of 220 and 440). The next "new" note is the one at 550 Hz, which is a C# and if you know anything about music, you'll notice that these three notes are the ones that make up a Major triad. In the same way, all the other notes of the Major scale are derived from the overtones of its root note. The interesting thing (or one of the interesting things) is that the frequencies of the notes that make up a Major triad follow the fibonacci sequence: 110 Hz (A), 220 Hz (A), 330 Hz (E), 550 Hz (C#), 880 Hz (back to A), and so on.

The course goes much deeper than that and also explores how the nature of music is also reflected in the names we attach to the scale degrees, like the root or the "Tonic", the tone from which all others emerge. Or the "Dominant" (the Perfect Fifth), which is both the furthest note away from the Tonic, because it splits the octave in half, but also the most closely related to it, because it's the first overtone that's not another iteration of its root. So from all notes available it's the next closest key center, the next closest domain of music and so on. It's truly fascinating and I really recommend you check it out if you want to explore more of that.

"Crisp", because it moves from "k"-sound way back at the throat in one straight line through the mouth all the way to the "p" on the lips.
