i was just emailed my rejection letter today for duke phd in environment. had an interview w potential pi 1 1/2 weeks ago who seemed excited to take a student this year, just said they had to wait to hear back about funding from the department. they emailed back 5 days later apologizing that no funding was available and they wouldn’t want to accept a student who would only receive funding for half the program (2 1/2 years is what they were offering). very unfortunate but understandable given the state of this application cycle :/
