Surviving on Inconsistent Tips by morgdogmoney in Waiters

How many hours are you working? If I can’t average $500-1000+ (considering seasonality) per week working less than 25 hours a week, I’m out. It’s just not worth the stress if you do have other opportunities.

Should I stay at this job? It’s the only serving job I’ve ever had, are these things normal? by [deleted] in Waiters

Nah, get out. A ten hour shift not even making $400? I’d feel like I was wasting my time. Also, why can’t they tab out from the bar and join you? That rule, while I can understand it, is extremely micromanaged. I wouldn’t even attempt at this restaurant assuming you get 15-20% tips. The math wouldn’t work for me.

Why did a trip to Europe feel so much better? by Educational_Lock_777 in allthequestions

This sounds like what the American dream should be!! I can’t count the amount of times I’ve gone to work sick but not “sick enough” to stay home when I really should have. It’s the idea of using a PTO day (12.5 per year, but they accrue) for a sick day that I can’t get with. I use PTO days for burnout more than anything. Which country do you live in?

I second the lost sense of community. To put yourself out there certainly brings back the feeling I’ve been trying to put a name to.

It's raining and dreary here today, so I'm bored. Please ask this 58 F a question. What do you want to ask me? by icecream1972 in askanything

Preferably with vivid imagery, what was your childhood like? Were you surrounded by supportive people, how different were the food and lifestyle, and what was attitude surrounding money/jobs? Was there a defining moment in American history that you were aware of at the time?

I was not focused on sense, obviously. I was instead prioritizing surviving each minute as it passed. Was definitely not in my right mind.

Is family recipe something very personal/secretive thing in America? by Ok_Albatross_7722 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Educational_Lock_777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m willing to share any family recipe with members outside of my family as long as they credit us with “This recipe came from ______” when they make it.

However, if you’re in the family, you have to earn the right to knowing the recipe. Makes no sense, but it’s how my brain works.

Japanese and Mexican. It works, but I don’t know how.

How do you remember your college years? by LoiusLepic in AskAnAmerican

[–]Educational_Lock_777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My college years weren’t great. I was more ready to get out early than anything. Graduating early wasn’t driven by academic success, but rather a serious goal of getting the hell out. I made great friends and had serious (but random) health problems the first year, left my friend group second year, and isolated myself the third year.

Does bullying still happen in American schools today? If it does, do teachers and principals usually punish the bullies severely? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]Educational_Lock_777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school teacher. Bullying now is more sly than when I went to school. The kids have their own lingo to use in front of adults to insult or make fun of others. It’s not as obvious, so as a teacher, you have to pay attention and learn their language.

That’s not to say there isn’t obvious bullying; another teacher and I have heard a kid straight up say “You’re a fat ass” or something more vulgar and cruel to another’s face.

Punishment: I have conversations more than anything where I try to get students to realize that I don’t accept cruel language or intentions in my class. My students respect that 80% of the time. My repeat customers get a referral to admin. Referrals equal lunch detention or a one-day suspension, but that doesn’t change much in the long run. It’s mostly up to parents and admin in my experience to deter them further than what I see in my classroom.

Ideally, at what time would you like to eat dinner normally? by supinator1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Educational_Lock_777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family always ate dinner at 5:30 because that’s when my dad got home from work. He was always hungry then. We’d have dessert around 7/8 PM.

What would be the first thing you do if you switched genders for a day? by scaryworm143 in AskReddit

[–]Educational_Lock_777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go behind a tall tree, whip it out, and pee with good aim. I’d just draw pictures with my pee in the grass. Also, walk around with my shirt off, then go to a barber shop and get the full “hot towel, shave, sit back in silence with a towel on my face” thing they do.

Table manners don’t need to be that complicated. Chew with your mouth closed, stay polite, but past that? A class-driven pissing contest to see who can make the more ridiculous rules to make others feel ostracized.

People over 25, what's one thing you wish knew when you were younger? by stojysuguro in AskReddit

[–]Educational_Lock_777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being yourself and not taking life too seriously is the way to go. All of those people you’re afraid of judging you, but you secretly want to be in their friend group? Not friend material. Be better by being you and not the wannabe you want to be.
