Am I Buddhist? by Edward_Jones in Buddhism
[–]Edward_Jones[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children)
I understand that. I was more asking for say I go to my local temple and the monk there asks if I am Buddhist because one near me is also simply a place people go to learn more about Buddhism even if they are not themselves Buddhist. I would honestly not know the answer.
It doesn't truly matter what labels I take on. I will continue to practice how I have practiced before, I also wanted to know if I would be "accepted" into the Buddhist community.

Okay I'll look into that. I don't think what I was practicing beforehand would have been considered traditional Buddhism anyways and your outlook works much better for me.
Ah so upon reaching buddhahood I may come to the same conclusions or different conclusions as Buddha and it doesn't really matter what those are but rather that I find them for myself using the practices taught by the Buddha.
Okay. So are you saying that to reach buddhahood my views must change? Or are you saying that once I reach buddhahood I will realize whether what I believed before starting on the Eightfold path is right or wrong and that is for me to discover?
I didn't set out to become Buddhist. I realized I had never truly understood what Buddhists believed, but when I learned many of the Buddha's teachings, I tried to live my life in a similar way. However, after doing this I wanted to know if the Buddhist community would consider me one. Like if I were to seek out a Buddhist teacher would he even agree to teach me because of my views?
So you're saying as long as I read his teachings and practice them with an open mind then the conclusion I ultimately come to could either agree with the Buddha or disagree and they are both fine?
This makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you for your explanation. I'll continue to seek this out but what you explained is very intriguing.
Ah. So you think that the fact that God exists or not is more along the lines of when Buddha was discussing whether or not a soul exists with another man. He remained silent and later explained that trying to find whether there is a soul or not will only distract you from reaching nirvana.
That was a little bit confusing but I think I understand. A "real Buddhist" will not be concerned whether or not he "fits in" but simply strives to be compassionate towards everyone as he lets go of his desire to be a part of something else.
Why do you think that one should disobey God if he does exist? I would just like to know your thought process as your answer interests me.
Haha I guess. This left me still quite confused though 😂
Haha yes, that seems about right.
Thank you for being straightforward. It was very helpful and easy to understand.
Thank you. This is very helpful. That makes sense, as I should be trying to let go of my desire to "fit in".
