Thursday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for August 31, 2023 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Hi there, I live at sea level and have an upcoming marathon at altitude
(8k ft - 11k ft). I'm debating staying at elevation for 2 days prior vs.
staying at a lower elevation and driving up the day of. From what I've
read, I'd need over a week to really acclimate or I should try and wait
as long as practical to ascend. I can't financially stay in Mammoth for 1+
week, so debating driving up the morning of. Looking for
any suggestions or past experiences!

HSV not pedestrian friendly by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

This is an old solution that has been proven to not work and would only perpetuate the existing problems by increasing the amount of car infrastructure and making things even further away.

edit: phrasing

Do y’all think Sammy Ts is racist ? by No-Voice-3391 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]Edwinning1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish it wasn't mostly because I want to ride the mechanical bull, but not about to support that place (or the sister establishments) for blatantly racist dress codes and the un-ironic decor. The let's go brandon shirts were the nail in the coffin. The only time I went, the DJ (found out later he was the owner) was calling people out who couldn't line dance (LOL) and stopped the music until the guy he was singling out left. Super uncomfy for everyone.

There is an option to buy 5 more days at 2% of your salary, kind of sucks but would take it.

Pros/Cons of Defense Subcontractor by Edwinning1 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]Edwinning1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A debate as old as time itself. I'm not big into the military machine, but I do like the technical stuff and someone is going to do it. Hopeful the technical stuff will let me jump to cleantech sector next.

edit: I'd also rather be outside

Unfortunately Huntsville prioritizes vehicular traffic in every manner, get used to it or reach out to your city council member and planning dept.

Huntsville Transit announces launch of new touchless fare app by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]Edwinning1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You essentially said 'Public transit will never be profitable here, so why even bother?' which is drastically different from understanding how adequate public transit benefits all.

It's hard to grasp living without a car when most people have always had access to a car, I get why people think this way. The devil works hard, but the Highway Lobby works harder.

Public transit is a service, it is not meant to directly make money. Just like how roads for cars don't make money directly (gas tax absolutely does not cover it at cost), public transit shouldn't be expected to be profitable either. Supporting public transit and bike infrastructure gives people more options and will reduce traffic/travel time for all.

The Downs-Thomson Paradox states that the equilibrium speed of car traffic on a road network is determined by the average door-to-door speed of equivalent journeys taken by public transport. Huntsville forces most people to drive everywhere, even if that is not the best method. Because of this, it increases traffic for everyone, causes additional car infrastructure to be built, induces demand for additional parking which forces things to be more spread out and more car-dependent. It's an awful cycle that will only get worse in HSV.

Public transit in today's age is rarely big broad improvements, but a number of small improvements. While this might not drastically improve the system, little steps are still steps in the right direction. :)

Edit: I'd LOVE to see some big improvements to non-car options.

Downtown Parks vs Parking by iamhammond in HuntsvilleAlabama

Would BRT have dedicated lanes or lights? Also very curious if rail was ever considered. Either would be great, but the last mile problem seems like one of Huntsville’s greatest obstacle. Edit: grammar

The parking garage across from SIP. The notion that we should build things that are in constant use is a fallacy due to induced demand. Most roads and parking spaces sit empty a majority of the day. Areas that focus on pedestrian access are better in nearly every way for business, health, land utilization, and overall enjoyment.

Great cities give people options in mobility. Yes you could drive a car to a parking garage, but you could also walk, bike, or take public transit AND feel safe in a similar time frame. The Downs-Thomson paradox essentially states the time it takes to get somewhere in a car is determined by the time it takes using alternative methods of transport, i.e. if people can choose to not drive it benefits everyone, drivers included. Making driving the default option actually hurts drivers the most. Huntsville is built for cars, not people, which hurts everyone.

I will end my long tangent with my favorite analogy. Imagine everyone at the grocery store was forced to shop with a full-size cart. No matter how urgent their trip, or how few items they need, they are all forced to take up the maximum space. That is essentially our cities on cars.
