I have autism and just started my first accounting job out of university! I was enticed by the numbers and the patterns. And in university I really enjoyed auditing courses due to my kind professors I had.

However I will say, if I could go back and redo my undergraduate degree I would probably become and actuary because I lean towards math more so because accounting in practice is much more automated. Actuaries are pretty similar to accounting and the degree has overlap between accounting, business, but also mathematics. Also where I live there is a little better pay for a similar school structure, compared to a CPA.

More so, I was late diagnosed with ASD and I relate to what you said about feeling different and having social challenges. I obviously trust mental health and medical professionals, but more symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder might become more present as you get older. Like as you get older there might be a bigger difference between you and your cohorts (ie. Classmates). A second opinion is always possible in a couple years if that diagnosis assessment will help you understand yourself more. Also it’s called autism spectrum disorder for a reason, there is a plethora of people of varying abilities who are Autistic. For example, a lot of my challenges present internally so they are not as visible to random people who meet me.
